It's important to be very clear about this, at the beginning.
If we meet with the manager and coachee together this is raised in that discussion. Overtly.
We do understand that managers / employers want to ensure that the coaching is effective, and the goals are achieved. And that's not a coach's story to tell.
Instead, we encourage the person we're coaching to have a sheet of paper where they can note down anything that they'd like to share with their manager.
In our final meeting, if they invite their manager, they can choose what if anything they share. What insights they've had, what they've tried or applied at work.
Triangulation has rarely, in our experience, been helpful in a workplace.
