  • TAFESA – Playford Trust partner of 25 years – was crowned the nation's best large training organisation at the 2024 Australian Training Awards last night. Bravo and congratulations! It's all about building the skills base and economy of South Australia – and that's what we seek to do together. Go team!

  • Welcome and congrats to our four new Board members. Former SA Government Ministers the  Hon. Trish White AM and the Hon Stephen Wade have joined our ranks, alongside resources industry leader Janine Herzig and senior academic Professor Carolin Plewa. Ms White is our new Deputy Chair. A professional engineer, Ms White entered Parliament in 1995 and held a range of portfolios in the State Labor Government between 2002 and 2005. She is now a director of government, listed and private companies and a recent National President of Engineers Australia. Mr Wade was Minister for Health and Wellbeing in the Liberal State Government from 2018 to 2022, playing a lead role in South Australia’s response to Covid-19. Trained in economics and law, he is now a Board member of RSL Care SA and Chair of disability services provider Community Living Project. Ms Herzig, a metallurgical engineer, is Executive President and Director of CEEC International (Coalition for Minerals Efficiency), a charity dedicated to promoting best practice and innovations in energy reduction, water and tailings management and reducing mine waste. Professor Plewa is Pro Vice Chancellor (Researcher Education and Development) and Dean of Graduate Studies at the University of Adelaide, as well as co-lead of the University’s Graduate Research Workstream. She has also provided marketing, strategy and analysis services to industry. “These are significant appointments that enhance the strength and diversity of our volunteer Board,” said the Trust’s Chair, the Hon Dr Diana Laidlaw AO. “Our work is important, and it is expanding. This year, with our industry and community partners, we provided around $700,000 to support students from first year through to PhD. Our scholarships are valuable – and they are prestigious.”  Dr Laidlaw thanked the four retiring Board members for their service: Deputy Chair Hon Paul Holloway, Hon Robert Lawson RFD QC, Prof David Day and Adjunct Prof Christine Charles.

  • Sustainability, advanced technologies, safety and the environment were common themes at the Playford Trust’s Resources Sector Awards ceremony last night. Without exception, the 17 university students who received scholarships – worth up to $10,000 – are determined to foster change and improvement across the South Australian resources and energy sector as they progress through their careers. There’s not much doubt that, collectively, they’ll have the necessary skills. They’re studying everything from geoscience, geology and geophysics to mining engineering, computer science and chemical engineering. Leading resources companies and the South Australian Government are funding a program of scholarships recognising the growing demand for engineering expertise in the energy and resources industry. This year 10 students are receiving support from partners including BHPIluka ResourcesRex Minerals Ltd (ASX:RXM)Santos Ltd and the Department for Energy and Mining, South Australia An additional seven awards – for a mix of Honours, fourth-year and final year students – have been funded under the Trust’s broader scholarship program and sponsored by AusIMM, BHP, Geological Society of Australia and Peak Iron Mines. South Australian Chamber of Mines & Energy (SACOME) chief, Rebecca Knol, reminded the audience that the our State’s resources are allowing us to push the boundaries of science, automation and robotics. DRUM ROLL…! Here’s the list of talented and worthy recipients.

  • Proud to be involved with this wonderful organisation supporting so many of SA's best and brightest tertiary students.
