🌟 Spotlight on Project Strategy: The Power of Indigenous Women in Project Governance Empowering Indigenous Women's Voices in Project Design and Governance is our latest discussion piece. It illuminates the critical role of Indigenous women in conservation, drawing on firsthand experiences across the globe. 🌿 Case studies include the legacy of Awajún women in Peru's Nuwas Forest, unfolding through enterprise and cultural knowledge preservation; initiatives such as the Indigenous Desert Alliance (IDA) in Australia, where women are leading the charge in stewarding Indigenous desert lands; and the efforts of Landesa in Jharkhand, India, where tribal women are fighting for and gaining land rights, ensuring their voices are heard in governance and policy-making. 🔗 Dive into the full report to explore how integrating Indigenous knowledge and leadership can transform project outcomes: https://lnkd.in/g37BzigP ❓Share your thoughts on how we can better support Indigenous women in leadership roles #IndigenousLeadership #WomenInConservation #SustainableDevelopment BHP Foundation

We’re frequently called upon to share real-world examples of best practice Indigenous-led carbon projects, providing guidance for those seeking to establish projects with strong community-led governance structures, equitable business models, and fair access and benefit-sharing frameworks. Our latest report, "Indigenous Carbon Credit Case Studies", showcases the leadership and innovation of Indigenous communities in climate action across the globe. 📘 What’s inside? · Savanna burning and carbon farming projects in Australia with KLC (Kimberley Land Council) and ALFA (Arnhem Land Fire Abatement). · REDD+ projects in Peru (with Conservation International), Colombia and Indonesia focusing on forest conservation. · Cheakamus Community Forest’s ecosystem-based management in Canada. · The Yurok Tribe’s work within California’s Cap-and-Trade Program. These case studies demonstrate different approaches that Indigenous communities are using to drive sustainable outcomes for people and the planet through nature-based solutions. 🌿 💡 Explore more: Download the full report here https://lnkd.in/g2tBrExh 👇🏾 And please share your great case studies below, we'd love to learn more. #IndigenousLeadership #CarbonCredits #ClimateAction #CommunityGovernance #PollinationFoundation #NatureCredits #COP16Colombia #ABS #IPLCs

🌍 New Report Alert 🌱 We’ve heard a lot about the potential of voluntary biodiversity credits (distinct from biodiversity offsets) as a mechanism to finance stewardship of nature but what we didn’t have insight into was the current state of the market. To remedy this, we partnered with Pollination on the State of Voluntary Biodiversity Credit Markets report, which sheds light on the rapid rise of these markets since 2020. As the world rallies to address the nature loss crisis, the development of voluntary biodiversity credit markets has accelerated. This report delivers a first-of-its-kind comprehensive estimate of the value of voluntary biodiversity credit markets and offers insights into the growth, integrity, and evolving drivers of demand. Top takeaways: 📈 Voluntary biodiversity credit markets are gaining momentum. 👉Indigenous Peoples (IPs) and Local Communities (LCs) are involved in almost three quarters of projects surveyed. 🤝 Nearly 20% of respondents already see premium prices for projects involving IP and LCs. 🪸🐋Reimagining Conservation 🐨🌿 What would it look like if we reimagined the way we do conservation in Australia? This was the topic of discussion last week at the Reimaging Conservation Conference hosted by #NAILSMA on Djabugay Country. We heard that greater value is assigned to western knowledge systems in conservation but that the tide is slowly turning. And that recognising Indigenous rights and knowledge is fundamental to all nature stewardship. We talked about the importance of collective partnerships and strengthening governance and Indigenous leadership across the sector. At the centre of the conference was a day on Country. It was a joy to snorkel the reef, hear stories in place and have the space for deeper conversations. One participant's words stayed with us: "I'm here because looking after Country is part of my everyday. It's what my family talks about when we get together—it's part of who we are." Together with government, philanthropy and the private sector we can shape an inclusive, well resourced, Indigenous-led conservation sector across Australia. #IndigenousLeadership #EnvironmentalStewardship #NAILSMA #DjabugayCountry #ReimaginingConservation Pic on the reef is with Jane Hutchinson Emma Pethybridge and Ariadne Gorring

“Local people hold the knowledge”. This is what we learnt when we visited Indonesian Papua to explore Indigenous-led nature solutions. Earlier this year, Pollination Foundation co-CEO Jane Hutchinson had the privilege of visiting communities in Indonesian Papua with the World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia and the Intact Indonesian Rainforest Program (IIRP). Hosted by the passionate teams at EcoNusa and Isyo Hills Birdwatching Lodge, we immersed ourselves in communities where nature-based enterprises like tourism, agroforestry, and sustainable fisheries are thriving. Our mission? To uncover how these community-led ventures can be the foundation for nature based market projects driven by the people who know nature best. Here’s what we discovered: 1. Communities have unique knowledge and capabilities that are crucial for the success of nature based solutions projects. 2. Customary Rights are essential for communities to legally start an enterprise and give local leaders the confidence to test and learn. 3. Small interventions can have a big impact and bring unexpected co-benefits. Communities often look to each other for successful enterprise models to replicate and scale. 4. Leveraging existing aggregation models, such as cooperatives, can support scaling. 5. Planning for multiple revenue streams is vital for sustaining community resilience. 6. A readiness tool could support communities to understand what’s needed to engage in new market opportunities and strengthen their current nature-based enterprises. A heartfelt thanks to our partners and the incredible communities who shared their wisdom. Together, we’re forging a path toward a future where nature and community thrive hand in hand.🌿 #NaturePositive #GlobalGoalsForNature #IPLC #JustTransition Arief Wijaya, Julia Kalmirah, Martha Karafir, Tom Owen-Edmunds, Nicholas Stacher, Sandy Henkes, Bustar Maitar, Ariadne Gorring, Kirsty Galloway McLean 📸 Moments from Jane’s inspiring visit to Jayapura and Raja Ampat, Indonesian Papua. Keeping the fire burning 🔥 We facilitated a place-based exchange to share, learn and experience an Indigenous carbon project, 'Tajimat Pujut', located in the Peruvian Amazon, as part of our commitment to cross-pollinate ideas 🌳🐦 Hosted in country by Awajun community leaders and Conservation International Peru, together with Indigenous leaders working with Indigenous Desert Alliance, Nature United, Kimberley Land Council, CIColombia Programa, CI Guyana, AIDESEP, Feriaam, South Rupununi Guyana, and other experts from around the globe including Landesa and EcoAdvisors, we explored the challenges and opportunities associated with creating livelihoods to support people and forests to achieve cultural goals leveraging carbon as a financing tool. What we learned is captured in the video 👇🏾 Big thank you to all the participants and to BHP Foundation for their support to learn, share and amplify the insights 💥 #EnvironmentalResilience #IndigenousKnowledge #PollinationFoundation https://lnkd.in/gxNGUQP7

"Nature is priceless, but hard work isn't. Putting a price on peoples' efforts to conserve nature can only help to protect it. Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IP&LCs) steward 80% of the world's remaining biodiversity, so flowing finance to community is critical to reaching our global nature positive goals." – Jane Hutchinson Pollination Foundation Co-CEO. Together with a collective of partners, we synthesised high-level insights and identified the pillars of activity critical for IP&LCs to access and lead nature credit projects. The findings underpin the design of an initiative to align IP&LC, donors, and corporates to incubate and scale nature credit projects together.
