🤔 How can ecosystem services enhance sustainable forest management and benefit certified companies and communities? Our Director of Latin America, Freddy Peña, recently shared insights on this topic at a forestry symposium, part of the 4th Chiquitana Forestry Fair 2024. 🌳 This event was hosted by FSC Bolivia and the Bolivian Forestry Chamber. The symposium aimed to create a space for analysis and reflection on the progress, lessons learned and future challenges for the management of Bolivian tropical forests. 🌍 Bolivia ranks third globally in forest loss due to land use changes and fires. In 2010, Bolivia had 62.7 Mha of natural forest, covering over 58% of its land area. By 2023, it had lost 696 kha of natural forest, equivalent to 370 Mt of CO2 emissions. 💡 During the symposium, Freddy highlighted how ecosystem services – such as carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation and water regulation – can strengthen sustainable forest management. He explained how these services provide additional opportunities for certified companies and communities to enhance their environmental and economic resilience. 🤝 He also participated in a working group that reflected on lessons learned and identified actions to promote sustainable forest management in Bolivia and reduce forest loss due to deforestation and fires.
