🌊🔬 The Q-SEAS Marine Pest Sampling program is underway at the Port of Cairns! With the help of Adam, Courtney, and J-Lo from Ports North, along with Jayden Zieth from Biosecurity Queensland, we're collecting fouling on plastic plates, plankton, and filtered water samples for environmental DNA analysis. These samples are compared to a library of over 200 marine pest DNA profiles, thanks to Curtin University. 🦠🔬 Started as a pilot in 2019, the Marine Pest Preparedness Program and Queensland Seaports eDNA Surveillance (Q-SEAS) program continues at major QLD ports, keeping our marine ecosystems healthy and pest-free. 🌱 This initiative is a collaboration between Queensland Ports Association, Department of Primary Industries and Biosecurity Queensland. It’s all about strong partnerships and working together to protect our oceans! 🤝 #MarinePestSampling #QSEAS #PortOfCairns #MarineResearch #ProtectOurOceans #MarinePestPreparedness #Teamwork

About us
Ports North is responsible for leading nine regional and remote ports in Far North Queensland. We are one of the most diverse port operators in the country, dedicated to creating economic opportunities and connecting communities. Our network extends across maritime sectors including trade, transport, tourism, marine services and defence. It means we can significantly impact social and environmental sustainability within the communities where we work and across our industry. With a significant presence in Cairns, we are positioned at the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef welcoming visitors from around the world. We attract major cruise liners and international superyachts benefitting local businesses and we are home to a growing maritime repair, maintenance and overhaul sector. We make sure kids can be ferried to school in the Torres Strait, and critical minerals and bulk commodities can be shipped direct from remote parts of the Cape to the world. We maintain and invest in infrastructure that creates possibilities for everyone, from families and small businesses to global corporations. Our business is made up of more than 90 staff including port service officers, maintenance crew, project and property managers, marine pilots, compliance and community engagement specialists. We encourage a culture of performance, where our people are clear about expectations and can make decisions that benefit local communities. Ports North is a Queensland Government-Owned Corporation (GOC) responsible to the Hon Brent Mickelberg, Minister for Transport and Main Roads and the Hon Rosslyn Bates, Minister for Finance, Trade, Employment and Training. GOCs are services identified as essential to the economy, providing critical infrastructure to the state.

With the Bruce Highway flooded and many roads across North Queensland cut off, our ports are critical lifelines for communities. They ensure that essential supplies, fresh produce, food, fuel, and medical goods keep moving, even when land routes are impassable. Today the Port of Cairns received 11 containers of fresh produce that will be distributed to supermarkets and communities across the Far North. Supporting our communities at times like this and keeping people and communities connected is part of what we do. Ports aren’t just gateways to global trade—they’re lifelines in disaster resilience. They play a vital role in keeping our economy and daily lives moving! #PortsMatter #FreightLifeline #DisasterResilience #SupplyChain

🌿WORLD WETLANDS DAY | The Port of Cairns is surrounded by important wetland communities in Trinity Bay and East Trinity. These wetlands provide critical feeding and roosting habitat for migratory shorebirds. We recognise that healthy water and ecosystems underpin the unique lifestyle of our region. One way we are supporting efforts here at Ports North is through our partnership with Wet Tropics Waterways. Under this partnership we provide monitoring data to support the ongoing development of a Regional Water Quality Report Card which tracks the health of our waterways. We are also working with TropWATER: JCU's Centre for Tropical Water and Aquatic Ecosystem Research and North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation on a research project that is investigating restoration techniques for key tropical seagrass species in the Great Barrier Reef. A big thanks and recognition to all of our partners for the important work that you do. #TROPWater #WorldWetlandsDay #Healthwaterways #GBR

🚲 MOBILISE | This community-led initiative on Thursday Island is providing local kids and families access to bikes. We’ve committed to supporting their cause through our Community Investment Fund and hoping you can get involved in giving. 👏 The cost to purchase and ship a bike to the Torres Strait is prohibitive. It means that riding to school with friends and cycling for fitness or transport is out of reach for many. Already, regular bike hospitals 🛠 and ride-to-school 🙌 days are providing the community a taste of how bike ownership supports independence, health and social wellbeing. Plus, it's just a whole lot of enjoyment. We’d love you to get behind this initiative too by donating what you can 😉 #PortsNorth #CommunityInvestmentFund

⭐ SUPERYACHTS | Cairns marina will farewell its sixty-eighth superyacht of the year tomorrow when White Rabbit departs for its homeport Singapore. At 84 metres in length, it is the largest trimaran yacht in the world. 🌏 Marina Manager Andrew Rokstad said 📢: “We’ve experienced steady growth in superyacht visitation, with a trend toward bigger vessels and longer stays. Our average occupancy is sitting at 66% compared to 48% last year,” he said. “Globally, the superyacht market is expanding, and Cairns is an increasingly popular destination. We’re perfectly positioned as an entry or exit stop for the Asia Pacific, so many vessels choose to restock and conduct maintenance here. The crews also enjoy being so close to the city food and retail outlets.” According to industry estimates a yacht of this size could exceed 💲40,000 in crew and services spend over seven nights. 😮 #PortsNorth #superyachts Superyacht Australia SuperYacht Group Great Barrier Reef Carter Marine Agencies
