Neuro-rehabilitation therapy for spinal cord injury combining current technologies and thought-control | Research group
About us
BioSpine is a Griffith University-led research project aimed at restoring movement and sensation in individuals with a spinal cord injury. Overwhelming scientific evidence has demonstrated how the human nervous system can rewire itself, restoring both lost motor and sensory function. However, no rehabilitation therapy currently provides the adequate stimuli to the motor and sensory systems to enable rewiring. Our team is developing a disruptive rehabilitation system using advanced brain control and human machine interfaces, based on a digital twin of the patient's neuromusculoskeletal system, to provide all the appropriate motor and sensory stimuli to maximise neural plasticity and permanently restore the interrupted connection between the brain to the muscles. BioSpine Project is led by a cross-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, allied health professionals and industrial designers at Griffith University, University of Sydney, and Harvard University. BioSpine is generously supported by the Motor Accident Insurance Commission, Perpetual IMPACT and Griffith University.

Thank you to Maryanne Harris, co-founder of RoboFit, for visiting the BioSpine Hub and providing a demonstration of HAL, the Hybrid Assistive Limb Exoskeleton by CYBERDYNE INC. It was an incredible experience, seeing the world’s first neuro-controlled exoskeleton in action! It aids neurorehabilitation by interpreting the wearer's bioelectric signals (EMG) during movement to control the exoskeleton. Maryanne also demonstrated the HAL single joint exoskeleton, which can be applied to specific joints for targeted interventions. #Rehabilitation #Exoskeleton #HALexoskeleton #Robofit #CyberDyne #BioSpine Claudio Pizzolato | Alastair Quinn | Kyle Mulholland | Matthew Hambly | Monzurul Alam | Isabella Faranda

MEET DR KELLY CLANCHY… Dr Kelly Clanchy is a Senior Lecturer, Program Director for Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology at Griffith University, and co-leader of BioSpine’s translation team. What is Kelly's role within BioSpine’s translation team? 💫 As the co-lead of BioSpine’s translation activities, her work relates to prioritising the voices of end-users, such as clinicians and individuals with a spinal cord injury, in the design process. Through active engagement of all stakeholders in the BioSpine research project's design process, we aim to create a final product that is user-friendly and caters to the end-users’ needs. What is her favourite part about working with BioSpine ✨ Her favourite part of working with BioSpine is getting to trial different research methods to include stakeholders in the decision-making process. She, along with her co-design team, have been able to publish practical applications of these methods, thereby contributioning to the co-design field. Last year, she even had the chance to present these contributions at RehabWeek23 in Singapore! Her journey so far 🛣 An Accredited Exercise Physiologist, Kelly completed her PhD from the University of Queensland, where her work focused on encouraging physical activity among individuals with neurological impairment. This journey sparked her interest in involving stakeholders in the intervention design and delivery process. Her team has since developed a framework that offers practical advice on facilitating co-design processes. What's next for her in 2024? ✍ This year, Kelly is excited about the recruitment for their PhD scholarship related to co-design for BioSpine 2.0. She is also looking forward to furthering her collaboration with the Gold Coast University Hospital through their Collaborative Research Grant. 🤫 P.S. Kelly is the next guest speaker in our BioSpine Talk Series program! She will be sharing insights on how co-design principles were applied to BioSpine’s technology, prioritising usability for individuals with spinal cord injuries. Her talk will offer valuable insights for researchers and clinicians aiming to integrate stakeholder engagement into their projects. 🗓 Join us on Monday, September 30th, 5:30pm at Griffith Innovation Centre. CLEANING UP A HIGH-RESOLUTION 3D PRINT… 🖨 Many of the advancements of the BioSpine project are thanks to the support and expertise of ADaPT Institute. ADaPT Institue allows us to utilise high-end 3D printers which are used to develop functional, quality prototypes for our project. Check out the post-print cleanup of the BioSpine Gimbal, printed in Nylon 12 powder for a high-resolution finish. A special thanks Senior Production engineers Kanau Kanah and Anna McKernan who set up the build and did the post processing/cleaning for this particular make.
