About us

Founded in 1995, QPASTT provides specialised, culturally responsive services to promote the health and wellbeing of people in Australia who have sought safety from persecution, torture and war-related trauma. Our vision is for people from refugee backgrounds to live lives liberated from the harms of torture, trauma and human rights injustice. We are a state-wide organisation, with offices in Brisbane, Logan, Inala, Cairns, Townsville and Toowoomba and outreach services across Queensland. QPASTT is a member of the Forum of Australian Services for Survivors of Torture and Trauma (FASSTT), a network of eight specialist rehabilitation agencies that respond to the needs of survivors of torture and trauma who have come to Australia from overseas. There is a FASSTT member agency in each state and territory in Australia. QPASTT is a member of the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT), a global membership fighting to eradicate torture and offer health-based rehabilitation services to help torture victims rebuild their lives. QPASTT is a non-profit Company Limited by Guarantee and a registered charity with no political or religious affiliations. QPASTT’s patron is Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young PSM, Governor of Queensland.

Congratulations to FECCA (Federation of Ethnic Communities' Councils of Australia) and Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland for hosting an energising conference this week in Brisbane, centred on the theme "Our Experiences. Our Future." It was a privilege for QPASTT to showcase our Workers Rights Education and Support Program (our collaborative work with Multicultural Australia, Queensland Community Alliance - QLD and the Queensland Government) and highlighting the important ingredients for community based healing work.

Together with our national FASSTT coordinator Jamila Padhee, we hosted the Hon Ged Kearney MP, Assistant Minister for Health and Ageing, in Brisbane yesterday. We shared stories from across our work with survivors of torture and refugee trauma, including the importance of centring lived-experience and expertise and how we are providing specialist support in the early years to address the impact on intergenerational trauma in children. Big thanks to Miguel from Third Queer Culture and Sohair from Queensland African Communities Council for sharing the importance of survivor-led initiatives and the impact of community/collective healing.

Pray for the release of the thousands of child and adult Palestinians arbitrarily arrested in Gaza; the release of remaining Israeli hostages; and, the release of Palestinian political prisoners. 4. Pray for a just peace. The vigil will commence at 7pm and will close by 8pm. The inter-faith vigil liturgy will include: • An Acknowledgement of Country. • Call to worship. • Young people reading from holy texts and leading intercessory prayers. • Silent reflection. • Simple prayerful activities. People of all ages and faith backgrounds are welcome to attend. This gathering is a solemn inter-faith vigil in a church — please leave signage/banners at home. Tea/coffee will be served after the vigil. Important: All attendees under 18 years must be accompanied by a supervising adult.

Trauma doesn’t discriminate. It affects people of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life, especially those who have faced the unimaginable while seeking refuge. At QPASTT, we see firsthand the profound impact that refugee-related trauma (and intergenerational trauma) can have - not just on individuals, but on entire families and communities. But trauma is not the end of the story. Through compassion, support, and community, we can help people navigate their healing journey, reclaim their sense of safety, and find a renewed sense of belonging. Together, we can build a future where every person who has sought safety here with us can thrive in our community. #SupportRefugees #TraumaInformedCare #MentalHealthMatters #QPASTT
