Queensland State Archives ensures the public records of Queensland - from the 1820s till today - are made, managed, kept
About us
Queensland State Archives (QSA) connects Queenslanders with their past - the histories of their families, the local community and the state - by ensuring that the significant records of government are available and accessible. Established in 1959, the archival collection comprises millions of public records dating back to the early Moreton Bay penal settlement of 1823. Public records form the cornerstone of government accountability. They provide unique evidence and context of the actions and decisions taken by governments over time. Through the Public Records Act 2002, we support democracy and government integrity; maintaining the corporate memory of government by overseeing the making and keeping of Queensland's public records. As the state’s lead agency for government recordkeeping, we offer practical recordkeeping advice and tools to over 500 Queensland public authorities. QSA is a business unit of the Department of Science, Information Technology and Innovation.

Today is World Food Day and we’re shining a spotlight on Queensland’s rich history of food production and export. 🍍 Pineapple: the pineapple industry began in the mid-19th century, thriving in its ideal climate. Canned pineapples boosted exports post-Second World War. Despite pest challenges, the industry now focuses on sustainability, making Queensland a key player in fresh and processed markets. 🍬 Sugar: starting in the 19th century, Queensland's sugar industry rapidly expanded with indentured and immigrant labour and the establishment of mills. Today, it remains a leading producer, emphasising sustainability amid market and environmental challenges. 🥛 Dairy: initiated in the mid-19th century, the dairy industry had grown significantly by the early 20th century, focusing on butter production and export. Cooperatives enhanced efficiency, while modern farmers prioritise sustainability, producing a diverse range of products that support the economy. 🦐 Seafood: rooted in traditional fishing, Queensland’s seafood industry has expanded since the late 19th century. Known for prawns, barramundi, and oysters, it is a major exporter committed to sustainable practices, adapting to environmental and market demands. 🍌 Bananas: Queensland produces 94% of Australia’s bananas, mainly the Cavendish variety for export to New Zealand and Japan. The industry has faced challenges from natural disasters and diseases but is adopting sustainable practices for long-term viability. Which of these foods is your favourite?
