Queensland State Archives ensures the public records of Queensland - from the 1820s till today - are made, managed, kept
About us
Queensland State Archives (QSA) connects Queenslanders with their past - the histories of their families, the local community and the state - by ensuring that the significant records of government are available and accessible. Established in 1959, the archival collection comprises millions of public records dating back to the early Moreton Bay penal settlement of 1823. Public records form the cornerstone of government accountability. They provide unique evidence and context of the actions and decisions taken by governments over time. Through the Public Records Act 2002, we support democracy and government integrity; maintaining the corporate memory of government by overseeing the making and keeping of Queensland's public records. As the state’s lead agency for government recordkeeping, we offer practical recordkeeping advice and tools to over 500 Queensland public authorities. QSA is a business unit of the Department of Science, Information Technology and Innovation.

Today marks Remembrance Day, a day observed since the end of the First World War to honour armed forces members who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Remembrance Day originated when the signing of the Armistice on 11 November 1918 brought an end to hostilities that had lasted over four years, symbolising a pivotal moment in history.

Archives are important for First Nations peoples, helping to preserve cultural heritage, history, and identity for future generations. Through access and right of reply to these records, First Nations peoples can reclaim their narratives and be empowered to control representation, interpretation, and benefit from the use of cultural knowledge and heritage. Queensland State Archives continues to commit to the aims of the Tandanya-Adelaide Declaration. Artwork featured in video: Brown Country by Bunya Designs – Leah Cummins

🌐💾 Today is World Digital Preservation Day—a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of preserving digital heritage. As technology evolves, so does the way digital records are created and stored. At QSA, we're adapting to ensure that these digital records are preserved, safeguarding our State's valuable cultural and historical assets for future generations. Earlier this year, we made history with the launch of Queensland's first digital archive. This milestone ensures that the State's digital records will be securely preserved, protecting our shared heritage for years to come. Pictured here are some of the born-digital items safely preserved in our digital archive, including files from the Vegetation Mapping of the Wet Tropics Bioregion and sites related to the Queensland Heritage Register collections. 📷1: vegetation Mapping of the Wet Tropics Bioregion: https://lnkd.in/guN-gUfv 📷 2: Regent Building, Brisbane City, stone wall feature and candelabra: https://lnkd.in/gYZTakbE These digital records are crucial for documenting and protecting our State’s rich environmental and cultural heritage. Preserving such invaluable records is a key part of our mission to safeguard Queensland’s history in the digital age. #WDPD2024

Today is World Food Day and we’re shining a spotlight on Queensland’s rich history of food production and export. 🍍 Pineapple: the pineapple industry began in the mid-19th century, thriving in its ideal climate. Canned pineapples boosted exports post-Second World War. Despite pest challenges, the industry now focuses on sustainability, making Queensland a key player in fresh and processed markets. 🍬 Sugar: starting in the 19th century, Queensland's sugar industry rapidly expanded with indentured and immigrant labour and the establishment of mills. Today, it remains a leading producer, emphasising sustainability amid market and environmental challenges. 🥛 Dairy: initiated in the mid-19th century, the dairy industry had grown significantly by the early 20th century, focusing on butter production and export. Cooperatives enhanced efficiency, while modern farmers prioritise sustainability, producing a diverse range of products that support the economy. 🦐 Seafood: rooted in traditional fishing, Queensland’s seafood industry has expanded since the late 19th century. Known for prawns, barramundi, and oysters, it is a major exporter committed to sustainable practices, adapting to environmental and market demands. 🍌 Bananas: Queensland produces 94% of Australia’s bananas, mainly the Cavendish variety for export to New Zealand and Japan. The industry has faced challenges from natural disasters and diseases but is adopting sustainable practices for long-term viability. Which of these foods is your favourite?
