We are thrilled and honoured to announce that the BMW Group + QUT Design Academy is now home to BMWs most prestigious supercar - the BMW M8 competition coupe! Yesterday we officially unveiled the vehicle at our new home in QUT Kelvin Grove Campus. The launch included speeches from Margaret Sheil AO, QUT Vice-Chancellor and President; Mr Axel Zeidler, German Consul-General; Jimmy Nassif, CTO idealworks and Rafael Gomez FDIA, Founder and Head of the BMW Group + QUT Design Academy. The endowment of the M8 is a huge milestone for the BMW Group and QUT (Queensland University of Technology) partnership, which signals the strength of the partnership. As a result, our spaces and capabilities at the Academy continue to expand with a new research space to house the vehicle called Beta Labs, alongside our office space now called Alpha Studios. We will share more info about this in the near future. In the meantime we are beyond excited to share this news with you all and can’t wait to get started on some awesome projects!! We extend our deepest thanks to our partners at BMW Group and idealworks with a special thanks to Jimmy Nassif and Dylan Sheppard for their continuous and unwavering support. Last week was the end of another great semester with some talented QUT design students completing our WIL Internship program. Tadhg Cullinane and Luca Wright both shared their final presentations with us, detailing their progress and the skills they learnt while here with us. Tadhg’s final design is a wall-mounted bookshelf design with the ability to change angles of the shelf, allowing for more flexibility with how items are viewed or accessed. Tadhg worked through a number of concepts this semester, responding to feedback and discussions and producing numerous prototype models. Luca elected to model the BMO cartoon character and added realism and further complexity to the model in order to push his skill development. He has now completed his internship with knowledge of 3D modelling techniques, UV unwrapping, texturing and rendering. Luca and Tadhg have gone above and beyond this semester to learn as much as they can and apply their knowledge to the project, which was great to see. Congratulations again, Tadhg and Luca, on your dedication and high-quality work!

We are very pleased to announce Luke Davies as the winner of our first student design competition! Luke spent countless hours learning new techniques and honing his skills to bring his BMW M8 Competition vehicle engine cover design to life. Luke has aimed to blend future-forward design themes while honouring the DNA of the BMW brand. He has also included considerations for manufacturing and removing/adding the cover from the engine during servicing. We congratulate Luke on being selected as the winner, and want to give a special mention to our runner-ups, Ella Hore and Kyran Dippel, for their submissions. We are already planning our next student design competition for early 2025 - so keep an eye out for announcements in future!

Last week Our Academy WIL interns presented their initial design concepts to us for their respective projects, marking the halfway point of their internships. We were very impressed with the quality of their work in just a few weeks. Luca has been 3D modelling the BMO cartoon character, adding realism and further complexity to the model in order to push his skill development. He presented his progress so far, highlighting the skills and knowledge he has already learnt. Luca will now move onto texturing and visualising his character in 3D. Meanwhile, Tadhg shared some great concepts for a semi-modular wall mounted bookshelf design, to store and display a range of our reading material, awards and other items. Tadhg is now putting additional effort into prototypes and developing the ideas before the project concludes. Well done to Luca Wright and Tadhg Cullinane for their remarkable efforts so far - we are eagerly awaiting their final presentations! #internships #interns
