National competency and safety management system for rail workers in the Australian rail industry.
About us
The Rail Industry Worker Program (RIW) is a national competency and safety management system for rail workers in the Australian rail industry. It provides a single electronic record for their health, education and competencies as they work across projects, move between employers and operate on different state networks. The Australasian Railway Association established the RIW Program in 2012 and has engaged Metro Trains Australia to power its delivery. More than 90,000 Australian rail workers hold a RIW card as part of the program, which is used by more than 8,900 companies in the rail industry. By using the RIW system, employers can access information on an employee’s or contractor’s fitness for duty, education and competencies in one place, making it easier to minimise risk and protect the health and safety of their workers.

At the recent Australasian Railway Association (ARA) Rail People and Culture Conference in Brisbane, our CEO Treaven Martinus joined a panel with Julian Sharp, hosted by Emma Woods (GAICD), Chief Operating Officer for ARA, to discuss the evolving landscape of the rail industry and the use of the Rail Industry Worker (RIW) program. 🗣️ Treaven emphasised the significance of the RIW, describing it as "our single source of truth." He highlighted its crucial role in ensuring safety and efficiency by allowing only qualified personnel access to our projects. The RIW program provides a robust framework for managing rail projects. Treaven discussed Martinus's role as a principal contractor on large greenfield rail projects, converting civil projects to rail, and our use of RIW with colour-coded sections, serving as the gateway for seamless project management. This approach uniquely positions Martinus to effectively manage all project sections while upholding the highest rail safety standards. This panel discussion underscored Martinus' commitment to continuous improvement and excellence in rail infrastructure. The Australasian Railway Association (ARA) once again facilitated a valuable event, fostering dialogue and sharing insights on critical industry topics. #Martinus #NextGenRailWays #ARA
