The closure of Sydney beaches this week thanks to tar balls (from oil spills) washing up is a reminder of the contaminants in marine environments we're often not aware of. Experts Robert James Bartholomew Manning G., Elisabeth Tondl and Stuart Khan discussed this and other contaminants along with host Lee Constable today at the ANSTO and Science Meets Business Innovation Series Webinar. If you missed it, sign up to the Science Meets Business newsletter for the recording. https://lnkd.in/geJ4cXSn

Some people question why all children should be exposed to #STEM concepts, given that not everyone will go on to further study or careers in science, technology, engineering or maths fields. But research from South Africa has found early engagement with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) concepts through interactive tools can profoundly enhance children’s visual literacy (reading, writing and creating images) and conceptual understanding (grasping ideas). Thanks to Moleboheng Mokhele - Ramulumo for your insights. https://lnkd.in/gYyqkYaE

One of the most popular things we work on for Careers with STEM clients are our job kits - and there have been a few! The job kits are an excellent way to showcase emerging and in-demand #stemcareers and the courses available to help get them. Thanks to our partners QUT (Queensland University of Technology) Macquarie University Torrens University Australia Monash University Australian Catholic University for helping motivate the next generation of #STEM stars. https://lnkd.in/giYDTeRY

Last week we launched a new and very important issue of Careers with STEM: Indigenous. Featuring 23 young role models across all areas of STEM, representing Indigenous STEM excellence across Australia and Aotearoa (New Zealand). The production of the magazine was led by a superstar advisory board of First Nations STEM professionals and educators, including Auraki Group Limited, DeadlyScience and Bigibila Education & Consulting and includes Indigenous advisors from the The University of Waikato, Aurora Education Foundation and The University of Queensland, as well as our former Head of Content Heather Catchpole, and I want to thank everyone involved for making it such an amazing, inspiring and informative resource for students, teachers and parents across AU and NZ. Indigenous peoples have deep knowledges about STEM that is part of a long continuum of cultural ingenuity and skills. This issue celebrates these knowledges and their connection to STEM careers. It encourages Indigenous students to picture themselves in STEM through connecting Indigenous ingenuity with STEM skills, and showcases surprising paths and opportunities within STEM through the narrative of STEM + X, where X is an area of students’ interests, cultural knowledges or skills. The magazine includes role models from across the countries, including remote communities. To kick it off, First Nations students were invited to Google to meet some of the First Nations STEM professionals who appeared in the magazine. As usual, Google provided an impressive experience for all. The magazine is proudly co-sponsored by Google and the CSIRO and created by STEM publishers Refraction Media.
