Take a walk with me down #ResilienceLane… one of the outstanding networking and knowledge sharing parts of this week’s Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience Annual Conference in #Sydney this week. Highlights for me from a packed two days: 🌡 Hot policy and Cool zones – Beck Dawson shared the metropolitan scale 18-month effort across Sydney to combat rising heat stress and heatwaves. Jon Swain shared parallel efforts in the City of Sydney to reduce the impact of heat on #homeless communities with pop up cooling stations! 🏡 Resilient Towns – David Sanderson and Andrew Rae led a deeply moving reflection of community-led resilience building in post-bushfire southern NSW, the application of serendipity, trust, and listening (wild), and the mentality that disaster resilience was really about “#doinglifebetter”. David argued that when we talk about systemic change we often think about policy, regulation and investment, but the #systemicchange we really need is "how we enable community led resilience action planning”. ⭐ The Resilient Building Ratings Tool session brought together IAG, NAB, Insurance Council of Australia, and the Actuaries Institute and the Resilient Building Council to share how the tool is increasing the robustness of homes across Australia and reducing #insurancepremiums along the way. We are still building #uninsurable houses across the nation, and only 38% of national disaster losses in 2023 were insured. 📄 Amanda Leck, GAICD shared the NSW Reconstruction Authority State Disaster Mitigation Plan, while Brendan Moon AM talked through National Emergency Management Agency's efforts to increase funding towards prevention measures whilst maintaining funding for #emergencymanagement. ⛈ Stephen Dredge talked though the resilience maturity model being applied to land use planning in SEQ and efforts to confront and shift existing, growing and changing hazard risk in that highly climate-risk exposed part of Australia. We know that land use planners often don’t #owntherisk for the decisions they make (nor do developers), meaning risk is transferred to insurers (where affordable), homeowners, emergency responders and ultimately State and Federal treasuries. 🏙 New emergency management (and cities) Minister Jenny McAllister was a constant presence engaging across the two days as she settles into her new role. And the Sydney and Melbourne 100 Resilient Cities teams were out in force too, reflecting on how methods learnt in #cityresilience building were being deployed across sectors (like #health), alpine regions, and regional Australia. After witnessing the devastation of the Black Saturday fires first-hand, Kate Cotter and her team have spent the last decade arming communities with solutions to help build their resilience before disaster strikes. In a world first, the Resilient Building Council’s Ratings program has helped 1000 Australians a week assess the #resilience of their home, and reduce their properties risk of #bushfire. A national network of experts have come along the journey, as well #insurers to provide premium discounting and #banking trialing mortgage discounts. The next step? #Flood, #cyclone and #heat. A highlight so far has been the Resilient Building Council Presentation and panel discussion on practical steps people can take to understand the climate risk of their houses.
