HELPR-1 just arriving in to Port Vila. Personal thanks to DFAT and ADF for allowing Barbara Daufanamae and I to use a humanitarian flight to arrive in Port Vila yesterday evening. The resilience of Ni-Vanuatu people is on full view as city life restarts and teams try and clear the roads around the two affected wharfs. Tragically several people cars are potentially under the landslide in this area and rescue and recovery activities continued throughout the night thanks to the Vanuatu, Australian and NZ teams. Keeping vaccines at the right temperature in countries where electricity and cold storage are not always available, is challenging. And completing that 'last mile' when vaccines must be transferred on foot can be even more problematic. The HELPR-1 clinical team supports provincial health teams in Vanuatu on a daily basis, to ensure that remote health facilities have adequate stock of essential and life-saving immunisations, while the Green Energy team repair and install solar powered fridges and freezers.

When you've had to rely on lead-acid batteries for power on a remote island, how do you dispose of them safely at their end of life?

Enabling local leadership and empowering others has been the cornerstone of our work in Vanuatu since 2022. The current HELPR-1 mission is the first to be entirely led our Ni-Vanuatu personnel, with John Vuti and Milton Buka coordinating the #greenenergy and #health teams. This week they are supporting Malampa Provincial Government and Malampa Health Promotion on our mission to Paama, Ambrym and Malekula. #togetherstronger #localleaders
