This Christmas let’s make sure our festivities are as eco-friendly as possible, with the scrunch test! The scrunch test is a simple and easy way to help you correctly recycle your wrapping paper. Each year, Australians use more than 150,000km of wrapping paper during Christmas – that’s enough to wrap around Earth nearly 4 times! Want to start using the scrunch test this year? Here’s how- 💚 After unwrapping your gifts, take a moment to scrunch up the wrapping paper. 💚 If it stays crumpled, it’s eco-friendly and can be recycled. 💚 If it bounces back, it likely contains non-recyclable materials, so will need to be put in your general waste bin. 💚 Remember to remove tape and ribbon from recyclable paper before tossing it in the recycling bin! By embracing the scrunch test, we can reduce contamination in recycling streams and make our holiday season a little greener. #scrunchtest

Did you know it takes one tree to make roughly 3000 standard cards? That means if every person in Australia sends and receives a card this year, that’s almost 17,500 trees! Switching to digital greeting cards means saving trees, reducing carbon footprints, and minimising waste. This eco-friendly alternative eliminates the need for paper production, transportation, and eventual disposal. Additionally, many e-card providers collaborate with charities and wildlife funds, offering a unique opportunity to raise money for important causes while spreading joy with your Christmas message. E-cards not only provide an instant, customisable, and inclusive way to share your warm wishes but also allow you to contribute to meaningful charitable efforts, making your celebrations more efficient, more generous, and more sustainable. Check out these e-card providers and make a simple switch with a significant positive impact on our environment. https://lnkd.in/dQbXTvyH www.charityecards.com.au/ www.greenvelope.com/

Happy National Recycling Week ♻️ This year, we wanted to share some helpful resources from the Southern Tasmanian Regional Waste Authority, with help from Cleanaway Waste Management, that tell us what can and can’t go in our kerbside recycling bins in the south of Tasmania. Next week, we will be sharing the same for northern Tasmania. Let’s all make a more conscious effort to ensure we’re putting the right things in our recycling bins 🗑 #rethinkwaste #recyclingweek2023

Landfills have been the age-old method for managing solid waste. These days, however, they have come a long way from the open trash pits that caused contamination and attracted pests. 🐁 Tasmanian landfills are precision-engineered structures designed to safeguard the environment and are regulated meticulously. Originally, just open holes in the ground, today it is more like a giant container set in the ground and lined to keep anything nasty from leaking out into the water, soil, and air. While modern landfills are undoubtedly kinder to our planet, there is a catch, however - they come with a hefty price tag. Local governments may need to fund them for up to a century past their closure to ensure safe waste management. In simple terms, modern landfills are not economically sustainable. It's time to rethink our waste disposal practices. Not only do we pay to dump our waste, but we also pay again to manage the ongoing environmental impact. Here at Rethink Waste, we’re all about cutting down the amount of resources going into landfills by encouraging you to become part of the solution. By making smarter choices – both at home and in business – we can all reduce our impact on the environment and contribute to a sustainable economy. Visit our website to find out more about modern landfills, and to get pointers on how to avoid landfills altogether by adopting the waste hierarchy steps – ARRR! Avoid. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. www.rethinkwaste.com.au

Everyone knows that garage sales are a great way of clearing out old stuff, and a fantastic place to look for a bargain, but have you heard of the Garage Sale Trail? 🛍👖🪑 Held over two big weekends, Garage Sale Trail is happening on the 11th - 12th, and 18th - 19th of November, and you can take part on one day, or more. You can sign up to register your own garage sale, but you don’t need to be a seller to be involved - with millions of items ‘set free’ from cupboards, sheds and garages across the country, you can be guaranteed to find some epic stuff at amazing prices on the Garage Sale Trail. Last year, over 300,000 Australians shopped or sold at more than 15,000 garage sales across the country. This extended the life of over 3 million kgs of 'stuff', not only saving these items from landfill, but also maximising the value of all the energy and resources that go into making the things we buy. That’s what we call the circular economy in action! 💚 This year there are plenty of Tasmanians taking part in the Garage Sale Trail. Find out more and get involved by heading over to our website: https://lnkd.in/gdTc87_d #rethinkwaste #garagesaletrail #reuse #circulareconomy

Did you know that old concrete can be recycled into aggregate so that it can be used again? 👏 Well, no wyou do! But here's some things you need to know when dumping your concrete. If it's contaminated with soil, steel, and/or other waste (like pictured), it can't be recycled. If in doubt, talk to your local Council about what products they can and can't accept! #rethinkwaste #recycle

We're thrilled to share some exciting news from Flinders Island, that's paving the way to a greener, more sustainable future! 🌏 The Flinders Island Council has just installed a state-of-the-art recycling hub, conveniently located at Walkers IGA Supermarket. It is now super easy to recycle items like batteries, bread tags, hair care packaging, printer cartridges and coffee capsules, by simply dropping them into dedicated compartments. This facility has come about through the council building meaningful partnerships with environmental champions like TerraCycle Australia & New Zealand, Close the Loop, MobileMuster Program, and B-cycle. 🤝 These partnerships ensure that the island’s recycled items will be handled responsibly and transformed into new resources, therefore reducing waste and conserving valuable resources. And here's the cherry on top - we've heard whispers of not one, but two more recycling hubs in the pipeline! This means even more accessibility to sustainable recycling options for the Flinders Island community. 🔄 Check out more here https://lnkd.in/e2t2x2Kq #recycleflindersisland #greeninitiatives #flindersisland #recyclinghub IGA Supermarkets
