Setting a “North Star” and defining “Big Hairy Audacious Goals (BHAG)” can be powerful motivators, but how do we inspire the team without setting unrealistic expectations? Consider how your targets guide teams towards meaningful outcomes. Agile ceremonies can be great tools, but it's worth reflecting on whether they're truly serving their purpose or have become routine for your team. When it comes to setting targets, size matters. For business goals, try making them small enough for the team to directly influence. Instead of a broad "increase subscribers by x%", how about "simplify the sign-up process to three steps with no data re-entry"? Technical targets can be more specific - along the lines of "increase deployment frequency to 10 times per day" or "reduce P1 issue detection time to 5 minutes". It's also helpful to align targets with your team's level of autonomy. Does your team have the decision-making power to achieve the goals you're setting? Can you minimise external factors? Clear, well-defined targets can really help focus the team on what needs to be done. The sweet spot for effective targets is that balance between inspiration and achievability. They should stretch the team while still being within reach. By considering these ideas, you might find you're setting targets that not only motivate your team but also drive real progress towards your project goals.
