Working Towards a Future on the Green Line: Roadcraft at the Australasian Road Safety Conference Last week, Roadcraft CEO, Sharlene and Operations Manager, Glen had the opportunity to join over 600 delegates at the 2024 Australasian Road Safety Conference (ARSC) in Tasmania. The opening address by Dr. Ingrid Johnston painted a clear—and sobering—picture of road safety in Australia. The data shows a worrying trend: road trauma causing death is increasing, and if we continue on this path significantly more lives will be lost in the next 6 years (red line on graph). On the contrary, if we can break the trend, road trauma casualties will dramatically reduce. ✅️ Lives will be saved ✅️ Families will be remain whole ✅️ Communities will thrive The question presented to the room? “Is your work contributing to the green line or the red line?” At Roadcraft, we can confidently say—hand on heart—we're working tirelessly, every single day, to change the current trend and get on that green line! While every life lost is one too many, the mission to dramatically reduce road fatalities by 2030 is a good place to start, and we know that effective driver education is the solution. At Roadcraft, we teach participants how to stay engaged, aware, and make driving decisions that reduce risk, which in turn reduces crashes and road trauma. From January 1 to May 12, 2024, Queensland saw 103 fatalities due to road crashes. One fatality is one too many: Young drivers (ages 16 to 19) face the highest risk, with speeding being a significant factor in fatal crashes. Newly licensed drivers with P-plates are six times more likely to be involved in a serious crash. Around 80% of young drivers in fatal accidents are male. We're pleased to announce the launch of Drive for Life, a great initiative where we at Roadcraft, along with the Salvation Army, local Police and Transport and Main Roads are joining forces to make a real difference in our community. Drive for Life is a critical initiative by the Salvation Army, one that supports young drivers between 18-25 with little to no access to an adult to accompany them during their driving practices. This program offers disadvantaged learner drivers a Roadcraft trained mentor to support them in completing 100 supervised log book hours, which is part of the process to obtaining a provisional driver’s licence - a significant step in achieving a new level of independence as a young adult.
