We are thrilled to welcome our new Technical Lead – Safe People, Dr Amy Williamson, who brings two decades of behavioural science and regulatory practice research, policy and leadership experience to Safe System Solutions Pty Ltd. Having experienced the devastation of road trauma first-hand during high school and university, Amy was drawn to a career in road safety – beginning with her Masters thesis into the hazard perception skills of young drivers, a PhD in regulatory good practice and positive psychology, and continuing through to her most recent role as Principal Advisor, Road User Choices with NZ Transport Agency – Waka Kotahi. A genuine Safe System approach includes understanding the role of human behaviour – we are all human, and as humans we are fallible, vulnerable, and vary in our capacities, capabilities, and experiences. Amy will be taking the technical lead in applying behavioural science and human factors to the design and delivery of Safe System strategy and intervention. She'll be working across NZ and Australia and focusing on taking a systems approach to both encouraging safe behaviour and designing for human error. “Behaviour is a very central concept to the Safe System approach because we ultimately need to design for people and how we behave in a complex and dynamic transport system,” Amy said. “We can make mistakes at any time, and a lot of what we think and do is at an unconscious level. It’s about encouraging safe behaviours to prevent crashes while preventing harm when crashes do still inevitably occur." We look forward to sharing more of Amy’s work soon!

With the recent update to the Australian Standard (1742.10), I put together a quick video to break down the essentials of signs and colours at priority crossings. In our raised crossing courses, we dive much deeper into the details - covering not just signs and lines but also ramp grades, heights, sight distances, positioning, drainage, lighting, and pavement. #roadsafety #trafficsafety #walking #cycling #JustRaiseIt #KeepWalking

  • Safe System Snippet: ADAS and motorcycles While Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) improve passenger car safety across many scenarios, they may fail to adequately detect Powered Two Wheelers (PTWs) (motorcyclists) due to their smaller size and potential misjudgement by drivers. This sparked the Connected Motorcycle Consortium to conduct an in-depth study on PTW conspicuity, analysing current research and technical reports to assess ADAS detection limitations and explore potential methods for enhancing PTW visibility and, ultimately, reducing motorcycle crashes using advanced vehicle technology.  Check out the work here: https://lnkd.in/gtgN4PF7   ———— Sign up to our mailing list for more snippets and news: https://lnkd.in/gXsAeAa9 #roadsafety #trafficsafety #motorcyclesafety #safesystem #SafeSystemSnippet

  • Safe System Snippet: Raised pedestrian crossings Why are we so passionate about raised crossings?🚶♂️🚶♀️ If this video doesn’t say it all, here are a few points:  ▪ Enhanced Pedestrian Safety: Raised crossings slow down vehicles, reducing the risk and severity of collisions with pedestrians. ▪ Improved Visibility: Elevating the crossing makes pedestrians more visible to approaching drivers, enhancing safety. ▪ Traffic Calming: Raised crossings naturally encourage drivers to reduce speed, improving safety. ▪ Accessibility: These crossings create a level surface for pedestrians, including those with mobility impairments, making it easier and safer to cross the road. ▪ Encourages Walkability: By prioritising pedestrian safety, raised crossings contribute to a more pedestrian-friendly environment, encouraging more walking. ———— Sign up to our mailing list for more snippets and news: https://lnkd.in/gXsAeAa9 #safesystemsnippet #roadsafety

  • Addressing Head-On Crashes – what works? Jamie Robertson, our Technical Design Lead, will be presenting at an upcoming Austroads webinar about addressing head-on crashes – one of the most common types of fatal crashes in Australia and New Zealand.   A central barrier is the ideal solution, but we need to understand all the design specifics and considerations.   With leading expertise in this field, Safe System Solutions Pty Ltd was commissioned by Austroads to conduct an in-depth study of treatments to mitigate head-on crashes on two-lane rural roads. Jamie led this research, with Dr Rod Troutbeck and our Senior Design Engineer Ilse Malagamba, which ranked the effectiveness of median and centreline treatments within the Safe System framework.   During the webinar, Jamie Robertson, Dr Rod Troutbeck and Jade Hogan will discuss the hierarchy of approaches and the implications for road designers, as well as the maintenance considerations and implications for other road users.   📅 Date: Wednesday, 30 October 2024 ⏰ Time: 1:00pm AEDT 📍 Location: Online 💻 Organiser: Austroads   More information and register: https://lnkd.in/gKsPqTSx

  • Safe System Snippet: Melbourne's 10 highest-risk intersections We often see lists of Melbourne’s most dangerous intersections published by insurance companies or auto associations. However, these rankings usually focus on all crashes or even congestion, rather than specifically on Fatal and Serious Injuries (FSI). Additionally, they tend to reflect past incidents rather than predicting future crashes by incorporating more than just historical data. This list, however, uses road risk attributes in conjunction with crash history to forecast future deaths and serious injuries at these locations. Nine out of the top ten highest-risk intersections are signalised. In fact, 92 of the worst 100 are signalised intersections. While traffic volume (exposure) certainly plays a role, we must ask ourselves why we consider this an acceptable outcome. Traffic signals at high speeds are inherently unsafe. ————- Sign up to our mailing list for more snippets and news: https://lnkd.in/gXsAeAa9 #roadsafety #melbourne
