About us

National Road Safety Week is an annual initiative created by the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group and is supported by Governments, road safety organisations and businesses across the country and around the globe. From 5-12 May 2024, Commonwealth, State and Local Governments in partnership with road safety organisations, campaigners and businesses, shone a light on this deadly issue with events, safety meetings, memorials and displays of yellow ribbons - honouring those we have lost and pledging to make the roads safe for everyone 💛💛💛 Please visit www.roadsafetyweek.com.au to learn how you can get involved for 2025 and beyond!!! The Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group was established by Peter Frazer after his 23-year-old daughter Sarah was killed in a road crash on the Hume Highway in February 2012. Sarah’s car had broken down on her way to University and she had pulled into the emergency breakdown lane while waiting for assistance. Tragically, the breakdown lane was not built to the 3 metre Australian standard and while the tow-truck driver was hooking up her car, a passing truck side-swiped the broken-down car killing both Sarah and the tow-truck driver instantly. Every year more than 1,100 are killed and another 40,000 seriously injured on Australian roads. Traffic injury is the biggest killer of Australian children under 15 and the second-biggest killer of all Australians aged between 15 and 24. Most importantly it is preventable.

On the last part of my 32 day Churchill Fellowship, and while it has been wonderful exposure to what's happening with road safety in Singapore, UK the US and Canada next week, I am definitely looking forward to getting home... And as soon as I am back, I will be doing the Road Safety Audit training courses with Safe System Solutions (in Sydney 12th-13th November). As some of you may remember, I did their Local Government course last month and mentioned on LinkedIn that I highly recommended it... I understand they have a few places left on the above course in Sydney, and if you are interested, you can get details via their weblink at: https://lnkd.in/gUqrknBy   (PS. Use the promo code Road2Zero for a 10% fee reduction.) 😊 I hope to see you there! Regards Peter

  • "Warnings about Melbourne's West Gate Tunnel-affected intersections "ignored by authorities" prior to hit-and-run that left cyclist paralysed" In short: 💛 Safety concerns for cyclists have been raised about intersections affected by Melbourne's West Gate Tunnel Project. 💛 Cycling advocates say two tragedies could have been avoided if authorities had acted earlier. 💛 What's next? In a statement, the West Gate Tunnel Project said it would continue to review and make safety improvements to its road networks. In May Brett Wallace suffered a life-altering spinal cord injury which has left him paralysed from the waist down. Cycling advocates say the accident was entirely preventable, having come just 15 months after the preventable death of a cyclist at another intersection affected by the Victorian government's West Gate Tunnel Project. Mr Wallace was cycling to work on the morning of May 8 along the Dynon Road bike path from Melbourne's western suburbs to the city. As he crossed the intersection at the Dynon Road and CityLink on-ramp, the light was green for cyclists. It was also green for the truck driver turning right onto the CityLink entrance. District Court Judge Joanne Tracey ordered Dhirren Randhawa's sentence of one year, one month and seven days, along with a non-parole period of seven months, be suspended on the condition he be of good behaviour for two years. Charlie Stevens sustained multiple injuries, including an irreversible brain injury, when Randhawa hit him with his car at Goolwa, south of Adelaide, during Schoolies celebrations on November 17 last year. Charlie was immediately conveyed to the Flinders Medical Centre where he died on November 18. Randhawa pleaded guilty to aggravated driving without due care and leaving the scene of a crash at an earlier hearing. Full story: https://lnkd.in/gtuzx7VU

We are so saddened by this terrible crash yesterday on the Sydney Harbour Bridge that resulted in loss of life and serious injuries. Our thoughts are with the bereaved, the injured, and all loved ones affected by this avoidable tragedy. SARAH’s “Drive So Others Survive” initiative is not only about encouraging drivers to actively protect those on the road ahead, but as part of Vision Zero, to ensure infrastructure is designed and maintained to minimize harm in the event of a crash... so “Everyone can #GetHomeSafe to their loved ones… Every Day… No Exceptions! SARAH is an advocate for using movable barrier systems on bridges because they not help traffic flow, but more importantly, prevent serious injuries and fatalities by preventing drivers from crossing into oncoming traffic. With potential head-on collision speeds exceeding 120 kph on the Harbour Bridge, the consequences are disastrous... but this is completely avoidable! Movable barriers, like Road Zipper, use linked concrete barriers to prevent head-ons. As I am overseas on my Churchill Fellowship, and will be in Canada in two weeks, and grateful I had already planned to see this tech in action on the Alex Fraser Bridge Vancouver. You can watch a video regarding the review of the Moveable Barrier System as part of the Alex Fraser Bridge improvement project. See:
