Western rock lobster is iconic to WA, so the Cook Government is pleased to be able to provide more opportunities for people to catch and enjoy this local seafood delicacy on one of the many unique charter tours operating in regional WA 🦞 The changes to the fishing rules mean from December 1, all charter businesses between Kalbarri and Augusta can provide a unique 'pot to the plate' lobster tourism experience with an increase to the number of pots and boat limits per vessel. Charter passengers will have the opportunity to enjoy lobster on board and take a few home to enjoy with family and friends, which will be a great drawcard to grow tourism in the regions, support local businesses and create new jobs. This announcement comes after a successful four-year trial which saw interstate and international visitors flock to WA to experience our unique rock lobster tours, with participation numbers increasing from 5000 to 13,000. It was a pleasure to hear firsthand today about the positive impact these arrangements have already had on regional charter businesses like SEA WEST WA, which operates interactive WRL catch and cook tours in Mandurah and Rottnest. With the recent announcement of lobster trade set to resume with China, these new permanent arrangements will provide more opportunities for WA families and tourists to access and enjoy our rock lobster locally.
