Shelter SA is the peak body for housing in South Australia and advocates for safe, affordable and appropriate housing for South Australians living on low incomes. Shelter SA is a registered charity, non-profit association incorporated in 1977 and is part of a national network of housing organisations and a member of National Shelter.

At long last (some) South Australian rooming houses are required to be registered with Consumer and Business Services with proprietors to undertake online training and fit and proper person tests. There is still much to do though to ensure that the for profit rooming house sector meets minimum standards and ensures the legal rights of vulnerable residents. Also, despite daily media on increasing homelessness and people resorting to sleeping in cars and tents, the State Government is dragging its heals when it comes to substantially increasing the supply of social housing.
