Victorian independent medical research institutes are in crisis and our ability to save lives is at serious risk. The indirect costs of research, that are specifically excluded from research grant funding, continue to rise unchecked. AAMRI VIC urges the Victorian Government to urgently increase funding for the indirect costs of research by $60m per annum, starting in the 2025-2026 Victorian budget. Saving lives can’t wait. #medicalresearch #AAMRIVIC #savinglivescannotwait Jacinta Allan #JaclynSymesMP Danny Pearson

Congratulations! Proud to be a member of the family.
BREAKING: The future of cardiology is here. Today is an historic and proud day for us at St Vincent’s: we’re officially announcing the success of Australia’s first ever implant of the BiVACOR Total Artificial Heart. Invented by Queenslander Dr Daniel Timms, the artificial heart implant took place on 22 November 2024 at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney in a six-hour procedure led by renowned St Vincent’s cardiothoracic and transplant surgeon, Dr Paul Jansz. After a few weeks in the ICU, followed by observation in the ward by St Vincent’s clinicians, led by heart failure and transplant cardiologist Professor Chris Hayward, the patient – a man in his forties from NSW – became the first person in the world to be discharged from hospital with the BiVACOR Total Artificial Heart in early February 2025. St Vincent’s is proud – along with our partners BiVACOR, Monash University, and the other organisations that are part of the Artificial Heart Frontiers Program (AHFP) – to be writing a new chapter of Australian heart health history. #ArtificialHeart #TotalArtificialHeart #StVincents

Step forward in solidarity for INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY (MARCH 8) to help #AccelerateAction. Focusing on the need to Accelerate Action emphasises the importance of taking swift and decisive steps to achieve gender equality. It calls for increased momentum and urgency in addressing the systemic barriers and biases that women face, both in personal and professional spheres. SVI’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge eight important members of our workplace community. Gene editing technologies are no longer the stuff of science fiction. The Koda Capital team toured the Genome Stability Lab with A/Prof Andrew Deans to see how medical discoveries can transform lives. The tour also visited Dr Michaela Waibel learning how a commonly prescribed rheumatoid arthritis drug can suppress the progression of type 1 diabetes. https://lnkd.in/e-5muXDU Get in touch with SVI to visit any of our 20 labs. https://lnkd.in/gJKpNurc
