Brightening the lives of seriously ill children, young people and their families.

About us

Starlight Children's Foundation Australia brightens the lives of seriously ill and hospitalised children and young people. When a child is diagnosed with a serious illness, life becomes consumed by hospital and treatment. It’s scary and overwhelming. As Australia’s broadest reaching and most reputable children’s charity*, we’ve worked alongside health professionals for over 35 years, helping ‘sick kids’ simply be ‘kids’. Every research-based Starlight program creates much-needed happiness for sick kids and their families. Happiness helps sick kids cope better with the pain and stress of treatment, and helps families feel more connected and positive about what lies ahead. ⭐ That’s why Starlight exists. Because happiness matters. At Starlight, our most important responsibility is to ensure our programs are provided in an environment that is caring, nurturing and safe for all children and young people. We have been awarded full Safeguarding Children accreditation through the Australian Childhood Foundation. Starlight has been recognised as an Employer of Choice over the years, most recently with a Great Place to Work accreditation in 2023. In the 2022 McKinsey Organisational Health Index, Starlight was in the top decile globally for 8 out of 9 outcomes. Starlight was also the Australian Financial Review's Most Innovative Company in the Government, Education and NFP category. *Reptrack Charity Reputation Index, 2022

  • Barbie’s been everything – an astronaut, CEO, even a mermaid. But her greatest role? Brightening the lives of seriously ill children like Lucy ✨ When Barbie-obsessed Lucy was just three-years-old, she was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, an aggressive type of childhood bone cancer. Over the next two years, with mum by her side, Lucy endured 22 gruelling cycles of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. ⭐ Amid the pain and loneliness of hospital, Starlight brought much-needed moments of joy and happiness to the family. 💜 When she was well enough, Lucy loved going to the Starlight Express Room to play, laugh and enjoy a break from the hospital ward… but her favourite part was seeing Captain Starlight! 🎉There was one unforgettable day in the Starlight Express Room when Lucy met a very special visitor in her favourite place in the hospital...Hollywood star Margot Robbie (who played Barbie) made a surprise visit! "The joy and laughter that the Captain Starlights bring to children in the hospital is so important for their mental health and wellbeing — and meeting Margot Robbie “real-life Barbie” in the Starlight Express Room was definitely a highlight for us” –Lucy’s mum, Sarah.

  • ⭐ There’s power in positive memories… It's been a year since the incredible Taylor Swift brought joy to Australia, making 16 Starlight Wishes come true during her 'Eras Tour' 🤩 Plus, it’s been 9 years since she visited the Starlight Express Room to surprise & uplift sick kids in hospital. At Starlight, we know that having positive memories to look back on is a vital way for children to get through treatment. That’s why our Starlight Express Rooms across the country still embrace the 'Taylor' era - complete with Taylor Swift cut-outs, karaoke sessions, dance-offs, and even jewellery-making inspired by her songs. 🌟 These moments of positive distraction do more than pass the time - they create joyful memories that help kids find strength during the toughest days. Here’s to all the memories we’ll never ‘shake off’ 🎤🎶

  • What helped Evie through 343 Days in hospital? Happiness 💜 When Evie suddenly became exhausted, with headaches and vomiting, her family’s world turned upside down. A trip to the emergency department led to an MRI that confirmed every parent’s worst fear – Eight-year-old Evie had a brain tumour. What followed was a heartbreaking 343 days in hospital, including urgent brain surgery, 30 rounds of radiotherapy, four rounds of chemo, and intensive rehab after she lost the ability to talk and move. 💛“The hardest part was the never-ending days in hospital and not knowing when Evie might be able to come home,” said her mum, Angela. Through it all, Captain Starlight was there to bring joy to Evie’s toughest days. 🚀 From silly challenges (like making the Captains act like monkeys all day) to daily quizzes and glitter nail bar sessions in the Starlight Express Room, these moments of laughter helped Evie escape the stress of treatment. “Even when she was very unwell, the Captains always put a smile on her face. I can't imagine what hospital would be like without Starlight.” – Angela.

  • Children with serious illness miss out on so much – school, birthday parties, playdates… the simple joys of childhood. ⭐🙏 That’s why Starlight Wishes are so important. Instead of missing out, they’re making once-in-a-lifetime memories. 💜 Their biggest dreams are coming true… because happiness matters. 🏎️ Last year at the F1 Australian Grand Prix, Starlight Wish recipients were treated to the ultimate F1 experience many of us could only dream of… meeting their heroes, exploring the pits and, feeling the adrenaline of race day. 🏁 Over the weekend – we’ve done it all over again – bringing more Starlight Wishes to life bringing joy to sick kids when they need it most. Because when serious illness tries to take the joy of childhood away, Starlight are there to bring it back! ✨ #AusGP #F1 #StarlightWish
