Together, we stand with Australians in need until they can stand for themselves.

About us

Mission Australia is a national Christian charity motivated by a shared vision of an Australia where everyone has a safe home and can thrive. Since 1859, we’ve been standing alongside people in need across Australia, offering real hope that has lasting impact. Backed by our supporters, churches, partners and funders, we work together for the long-term wellbeing of anyone who needs us, reflecting our values of respect, compassion, integrity, perseverance and celebration. We collaborate with people experiencing homelessness or disadvantage to tackle the root causes of their challenges through providing access to safe, affordable homes and innovative, evidence-based support services. Every day we deliver homelessness crisis and prevention services, provide social and affordable housing, assist struggling families and children, address mental health issues, fight substance dependencies, support people with disability and much more. Mission Australia believes a person’s circumstances shouldn’t define their future and that given the right support, everyone can reach their full potential. That’s why we stand together with Australians in need, until they can stand for themselves.

Rebecca and her family experienced homelessness through no fault of their own. Forced to sleep in their car with their 11-year-old daughter, who has high medical needs, they found support and safety at Mission Australia’s Fairfax House.  This Homelessness Week, we’re raising awareness of the reality of homelessness in Australia and the ways we can help end it. Learn more on our website.    *Fairfax House provides accommodation, support and case management to vulnerable families who would otherwise be homeless.  During their stay, we work with the families to help them secure safe, affordable and secure accommodation. #homelessnessweek2024 #endinghomelessness

Every night over 122,400 Australians experience homelessness.* Around 6% of the homeless population ‘sleep rough’, an expression used to describe people sleeping in the open or living without a home or shelter. The remaining 94% are typically hidden from view, relying on temporary forms of accommodation or living in overcrowded dwellings*. Some people avoid interacting with people sleeping rough due to a lack of knowledge or uncertainty about what to say or do. It's ok to feel unsure, concerned or even a little overwhelmed. Patrick from Missionbeat, a Mission Australia service that reaches people sleeping rough in Sydney, shares his tips on how to help approach someone experiencing homelessness.  Learn more about ending homelessness in Australia: https://lnkd.in/gWj39reb * ABS (2021) Census of Population and Housing: Estimating Homelessness

“Homelessness is a community issue, not just an issue to be solved by governments and non-profit organisations.” - Milton Milloy, Mission Australia Area Manager, Geraldton, WA. Every Friday morning, you’ll find Milton flipping eggs and browning bacon in the park, helping serve up a warm breakfast for people experiencing homelessness in Geraldton. Riding his bike to the BBQ spot, Milton says he’s simply doing his part to help serve up a warm breakfast for people experiencing homelessness in Geraldton. “I felt it was important to do something for community members who were not as fortunate... I got involved with a group supplying and cooking breakfast.” says Milton.      Learn how you can get involved in helping end homelessness: https://lnkd.in/g5NgKC9b   Thanks to the incredible people and organisations in Geraldton who make this breakfast possible: Geraldton Rough Sleeper Coordination Group, Reduce Homelessness in Geraldton, and Advance to Zero Geraldton.

When young people experience homelessness, it makes everything harder. Our new Youth Survey report ‘The unfair divide: Disadvantage faced by young people who are homeless’ shines a light on the challenges these young people face, across multiple areas of their life, compared to those with stable housing. Ending homelessness for young people will require a range of approaches to make sure that experiences of homelessness are rare, brief and non-recurring. Learn more about the experiences of youth homelessness and solutions in our report. Download your copy today and register for our webinar on Tuesday 6 August.
