🔥⛈️☀ Disaster resilience and recovery has never been so important and South East Queensland (SEQ) has just released a proactive plan for our region: https://lnkd.in/g_DykhFt Why it’s important ✅ By supporting communities to prepare for disasters, we aim to reduce the impact of these catastrophic events on species, ecosystems, and agricultural natural capital assets. ✅ This is essential because frequency and severity of climate-driven disaster-scale events is projected to continue to increase. ✅ Taking proactive action is particularly important for SEQ, which is recognised as one of the most climate-exposed regions in the country. ✅ The plan #highlights the #pivotal role that #biodiversity and #agricultural resources have in our emergency planning and response efforts and outlines how investing in disaster preparedness can help reduce long-term costs for recovery and restoration post-disaster 🌿🌱 ✅ The plan is called the “Biodiversity and Agricultural Natural Capital Assets Emergency Preparedness & Response Plan (2024)” and you can download a copy here: https://lnkd.in/g_DykhFt

🔥 We hosted a first-of-its-kind fire information night with members of the Gold Coast RFSQ Brigades! Despite the storms, the night saw a strong turnout of 101 dedicated RFSQ brigade members, bringing the good vibes and banter on all things fire ecology and hazard-reduction burns. The City of Gold Coast identified that their RFSQ brigade members were interested in fire ecology and collaboratively worked with Healthy Land & Water to get resources to their members. It was great to see council take clear steps to help all of the brigades on the Gold Coast gain valuable knowledge. Thank you all for the adamant feedback of "more cake!", this will be taken into consideration for the next event 🎂 For councils and organisations interested in tailoring a workshop specific to their community’s needs, please contact Hannah Etchells hannah.e@hlw.org.au. Your collaboration can help further improve fire management practices and community safety. Queensland Fire Department https://lnkd.in/gGTSDHaj

We’ve hit a significant milestone by becoming majority community owned! This marks a pivotal moment in our 25-year history as we ramp up efforts to protect and build the resilience of our beautiful and biodiverse region 🌿 The transition to majority community ownership has been made possible by SEQ Council of Mayors, a group which had been instrumental in our formation, stepping back, relinquishing their part-ownership. This move recognises that we are now well-established and ready to thrive independently with our established systems and partnerships. Goodbye shallow-rooted erosion-causing weeds, hello deep-rooted and stable Lomandras!🌿 We joined Cubberla-Witton Catchments Network (CWCN) in putting some solid roots down in a nice little urban pocket in Chapel Hill a few Fridays ago as part of the Cicada Park Stage 3 project. With CWCN at the helm, and Oxley Creek Catchment Association leading the earthworks and revegetation work, this project is looking more promising by the minute 🍃 Read about stages 1 and 2 of the Cicada Park project: https://lnkd.in/g3QpVPfF This CWCN project was funded by the Australian Government's Urban Rivers and Catchments Program. Shout out to project gurus Senior Scientist Chelsea Kluske and Scientist Georgia Glidden for all your work in this collaborative multi-stage project.
