Aiming for 1 MILLION Schools teaching best-practice Career Education

Is your teen a future Doctor? 👩⚕️ Every year, Entry to Medicine is a huge thing for secondary schools, with Careers Advisors/Guidance Officers being hit with countless questions about dates, universities, programs, courses, interviews etc. It's complex, because even in Australia & New Zealand, there's 26 different courses from our universities, plus 11 different post-grad options too - so how can they find the time to put all of this together for their students? That's where the Entry to Medicine Guide comes in, which is now one of the most sought-after guides in secondary school education. It covers: - Basics of studying Medicine - Your study options - The Assessment process - The UCAT - Creating a Plan B (not everyone will get in) - Understanding Fees & Places - Key dates - Direct Entry Programs - Separate Entry Programs - Postgraduate Programs All in one 'how-to' resource for schools to share with students & families. 🌟 Guess what though? We sent it out to member schools THIS MORNING at 6.40am and here is what's already come back - "Amazing! Thanks Team. Looks Great!" Sarah Rochford, Careers Counsellor Admin Asst, St Peters "Thanks. What a great resource." Rob Walker, Careers & Further Education Coordinator, Galen College "Such an amazing resource, thank you very much!" Peta Bird, Careers Adviser, St Augustine's College Sydney "Just wanted to say thanks - love this guide so much!" Toula Hremias, Future Pathways Coordinator, Cabra Dominican College "Thank you so much. Always an amazing resource!!!! Greatly appreciated." Simone Fleay, Head of Careers & Pathways, PLC Perth --- Definitely makes it all worth it when we know that each of these careers advisors are helping 20, 30, 50 students to apply for medicine. That's a LOT of effort saved. The 7th edition (and by far our best so far) is now available online, so if your teenager, or a colleague/friend's teenager is talking about studying medicine next year, check if your school has a Study Work Grow membership to get a free copy, or pop over to our online library to get a copy today. Just search 'Study Work Grow Library' and you'll find it in the first result. P.S. If you're a school #careersadvisor, #guidanceofficer, or #schoolcounselor, just email schools@studyworkgrow.com to ask for a sample copy. We'll happily send you one. #entrytomedicine #highschool #secondaryschool #medicine #careereducation #careerdevelopment #schoolguidance #ucat #medicalpathways #doctor #australia #nz 2/105

Where did you go for work experience? For my week of work experience, I tagged along with an engineer who worked at a 'Water Recycling Facility' aka a Sewage Treatment Plant 💩 I had a hard time explaining what I did for the week to my peers without them working out that I'd been to an STP, but I absolutely loved my time there. The week did exactly what it was supposed to do, and confirmed that, while I enjoyed the project management aspect of the work, I wasn't all that keen on the actual 'engineering' bit. Fast forward far too many years, and this year my daughter Rose will be going on work experience. Not sure where she'll be headed yet (she's really into food and nutrition, so if you have any ideas hit me up), but I know she's looking forward to it. We know that the actual time spent in the workplace on work experience is just part of the learning journey. In order for young people to be able to make use of their experiences and understand what it all means, they need to reflect on their experience as it unfolds. That's why we've designed the new Work Experience Journals. There's a week-long version (this one) which is a bit more scaffolded, and a more open Reflection Journal that can be completed after just one day or even after a workplace visit. I'm a realist, so I know that most kids won't complete these in their entirety, but that's ok - they're designed so that they can scan the questions and do some easy reflecting, which will hopefully make it easier for them to get the most out of their experience. The Journals are part of the Work Experience Resource Pack, and they've been sent out to member this morning, so if you're already a Study Work Grow member please check your inbox, and if you're not let me know.

Satisfice = satisfy + suffice. This is where we pick the first option that satisfies our needs without going any further. Have you ever felt like you've had a make a good enough choice in your career? I see it so often in career conversations, when someone will tell me that they don't hate their job, but they don't really love it either. There's nothing wrong with that, and lots of us just see our jobs as a 'job', but I'm one of those people who's always wondering if we can do better so in this edition of Pondering Careers I've explained the problem (as I see it) and then outlined a couple of paths to a solution. Usual Pondering Careers rules apply - share your own experiences and ideas, let me know what works for you and what doesn't, and let's get the conversation going. #GoodEnough #CareerChoice

Pondering Careers is back for 2025 with two bold(ish) predictions for the world of work. I think we're trending towards a more human-centred workforce, where profits will start sharing the table with people and purpose, which should lead to more productivity. Here are my two predictions: 1. AI will make us more transparent. Companies will need to be able to explain their supply chains and show where they use AI in their workflows. People will need to show when and how they use AI platforms or other tools to complete their work, and we'll all need to get used to being transparent about what we do. 2 - We'll move away from 'remote' and towards true flexibility. To recruit and retain the skilled and experienced people they need, organisations will need to think beyond salary and offer more flexible options. But I want to know what you think - what are your predictions for 2025? Share your own ideas, and tell me if you think I'm widely off track. #PonderingCareers #AITransparency #RemoteWork #2025Predictions

It's still pretty early in the year but I'm back deep in the data and, as my single resolution this year was to share more of my development processes, I'm starting out with an example of how I've been building up our LMI Dataset. I've used the Australian Skills Classification again (I really love that thing) but have also mapped everything to the ISCO codes, ESCO codes, and the new NZ National Occupation List so we can use the right terms for occupations and pull in the correct corresponding LMI. Not going to lie, it's a pretty big task for the start of the year but I've enjoyed being able to focus before all the zooms and slacks start up again. The two younger teens are off enjoying adventures with their Dad, and we're gearing up for our trip to Japan in a couple of weeks with Ethan, who's about to start Year 12 and is much more interested in hanging out with his friends than his mother. All of which means I can drink endless cups of tea and allow myself to go down excel rabbit holes for another few days. In the doc, you can see an example of how I've used the data from the ASC to identify key technical skills, then mapped these and occupations to our Pathways and Clusters. This will be helpful for the Ponder Plans, because students will be able to see the types of skills, interests, and other factors that match to each occupation. #CadiClusters #LabourMarketInformation #NewYearResolutions
