  • Last Friday, we hosted an out-of-the-world seminar: “Space Series: Young Professionals in the Global Space Industry”. The event was for current university students featuring an international panel of accomplished young professionals in THEIR TWENTIES including: Mary Angelique G. Demetillo (PhD) from NASA Langley Research Centre researching the affects of air pollution on policy, satellite observations and health using remote sensing. Byung Joon (Bryan) Ahn, a Senior Research Engineer from Satrec Initiative in South Korea Marcos Eduardo Rojas Ramirez from Capgemini Engineering in France Charleston Dale Ambatali from the University of Philippines and Tokyo researching Space-Based Solar Power and Assembly in Space Gillian Chin from Space Faculty in Singapore spearheads outreach and education programs for children, youths and young adults Harlee Quizzagan from XentriAI is a lead engineer in machine learning and artificial intelligence. The event, open to all, celebrated various facets of space science and technology, drawing attendees interested in space exploration, women's advocacy, and more. Notably, inquisitive questions flowed from both the online and in-person audiences, delving into space policy considerations, the harmful effects of NO2 to space debris mitigation. This interactive element added depth to the discussions, making the Space Series an engaging platform for knowledge exchange and exploration. Overall, our “Space Series: Young Professionals in the Global Space Industry” successfully brought together a panel of interdisciplinary space professionals and we encourage more interdisciplinary audience and speakers to join us to celebrate and explore various facets of space science and technology. We'd also like to thank our SWAE team for organizing this event. Kaylee Li, Tamara Mason, Kelly Chen, Elise Deveson, Amala Cuganesan, Emma Jewell

I had the honour of attending the Space Generation Congress and International Astronautical Congress in #Baku. It was an incredible experience – from making international friends to meeting real astronauts, this trip has had a profound impact on my perspective and aspirations in the Space sector. What truly makes SGC extraordinary is the people. I was privileged to be part of the #NASA Earth Science Working Group, working on “Expanding Global Efforts to Implement Earth Science to Action Strategies.” Special thanks to our amazing NASA mentors, Nicole Herrmann and Kate Becker, and to the brilliant Fiorella Arias Bonilla for moderating. At the NASA SCaN workshop hosted by the one and only Angela Peura, we delved into topics ranging from the Quantum realm to Deep Space Navigation. At IAC 2023, I had the privilege of presenting my co-authored paper on “Space Science and Exploration in the Asia Pacific: A Comprehensive Review” with a highlight on youth contributions to space activities in Asia Pacific to my peers and leaders in the industry. Both congresses gave me the opportunity to meet inspirational individuals from various corners of the industry, including NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration executives and engineers, Airbus Defence and Space engineers, Elon Musk, astronauts, researchers, and the interdisciplinary young professionals at the Space Generation Advisory Council whose experiences have deeply motivated me. I want to thank the Space Generation Advisory Council and the International Astronautical Federation for inviting me to attend the conferences. Thank you to the SGAC executive and organising teams for creating this unforgettable experience. I’m extremely grateful and honoured for being selected as a delegate. Special thank you as well to the University of Sydney, particularly Engineering and Computer Science - University of Sydney and the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering for making this trip possible. #USYD #LeadershipForGood #SpaceGenerationAdvisoryCouncil #IAC #SGC #engineering #WomeninSTEM #spaceengineering

    Final-Year Aerospace Engineering Student

Last Wednesday I was very fortunate to be given the opportunity to speak at the Times Higher Education World Academic Summit 2023 in Sydney. I was asked to contribute to the panel 'Leadership reflections: Value proposition of the on-campus experience' with incredible academic leaders Evelyn Welch from Bristol University, Feridun Hamdullahpur from International Business Unviersity and Raghunathan Rengasamy from Indian Institude of Technology, moderated by Joanne Wright from the University of Sydney. On this panel I shared my thoughts on the importance of the on-campus experience for students and how intellectual/human engagement is part of a 'social contract' between students and the institutions/professors. We want and need deeper connections with both our teaching staff and our cohort to fulfill our learning potential and to extract learnings from each other. Collaborative spaces and engaging lectures/tutorials are cornerstones to this. My purpose on this panel was to be a student voice on developing issues in higher education post-Covid and share my own university experience to the 500 academic leaders in attendance. I would like to thank Times Higher Education and Engineering and Computer Science - University of Sydney for this opportunity to have honest conversations about the future of education. I am very grateful for this experience and I have been extremely humbled by the positive reception for my small contribution to the panel.
