Big things are happening!
On Wednesday, July 31st, over 100 attendees from university, industry, and academia gathered at Cicada Innovations, National Space Industry Hub. A huge thank you to Alex Shapilsky and the team for kindly providing the perfect venue. We hosted a memorable and impactful event – the Sydney Interplanetary Rover Initiative's Preliminary Design Review & Space Industry Networking Night.
Following the introduction of the University of Sydney's first rover team, where we aim to design, build, test, and deploy a modular Lunar & Mars rover with various science exploration payloads for the Australian Rover Challenge #ARCh and University Rover Challenge #URC, we invited the Space Research Student Committee supported by the NSW Space Research Network to speak. As our Major Event Partner, we would like to thank the entire committee for their immense support. Special thanks to Kym Kraljevic, Khushi D., and Keira Chrystal.
Our PDR detailed our Plan-on-a-page, Concept of Operation, requirements, and our plan for verification and validation. Thanks to Aude Vignelles, Dr. Clyde Webster, Peter Loughlin, Johan Barthelemy, Stefan Williams, Alexander Ryan, Aidan O'Brien, Anil Raj Ravindran, and, most importantly, the continuous support from our academic supervisors Salah Sukkarieh and Anne Bettens, we have improved our redundancy. Thanks to the Faculty of Engineering - University of Sydney for supporting our passions, and the Australian Centre for Robotics.
The night continued with Geraldine Baca Triveno, PhD the Director of Deloitte Space sharing her stories and passion for space and highlighting what Deloitte Space does on a global scale. Following her, we had an out-of-this-world panel discussion joined by three leaders who brought unique insights into "Launching Careers: Making the Leap into the Space Workforce." Thank you, Steven Freeland, Keira Chrystal, and Anne Bettens, for your very insightful wisdom and a night full of not only space coaching but life coaching.
To conclude the long yet swift evening, we had a special guest joining us from the other side of the world. Matej Poliaček, soon to be the Flight Director of the International Space Station Columbus Module, shared his stories of training as an analog astronaut, experiencing zero-g flights, the wonders of Space Generation Advisory Council, and the life of operating the International Space Station.
