Talison Lithium

Since 1983, when it became Australia’s first hard rock lithium mine, our Greenbushes Lithium Operation has led the way in lithium mining and processing innovation. While having the best ore body in the world certainly helps, it is our people and the wider South West community who have been central to our success. This is why it was a proud moment for our CEO, Rob Telford, to be invited to participate in a panel the South West Development Commission's Innovative Industries of the Future Conference. Greenbushes is a globally significant operation, providing a critical mineral at scale, integral to the global transition to cleaner energy. Rob shared Talison’s vision for the future and emphasised that Talison is eager to engage meaningfully with stakeholders, particularly community and government to balance its expansion plans with the region’s objectives and find ways to collaborate effectively. Thank you to the SWDC for the invitation to participate on the panel, and to the moderator, GHD Energy and Resources Executive Leader Mike Nolan, as well as fellow panellists, International Graphite Chair Phil Hearse and Green Steel of WA Co-founder Don Johnston, for such an interesting and honest conversation.

We’re proud to have recently received a 2024 Volunteer Employer Recognition Award (VERA) from Department of Fire and Emergency Services. Operating in the South West of Western Australia, we recognise the unique challenges that come with living and working in a regional area - especially when it comes to emergency response. Being a predominately residential mine, we see ourselves as part of the community, not apart from it. Many of our team members volunteer with local bushfire brigades and other emergency services, and we’re proud to support them by making time for training and emergency callouts. We recently hosted our annual Mine Open Day, a day always filled with great pride for Talison and its contractors as we share with our friends, family, and community what we do, how we do it, and most importantly, why we do it. This year, we focused on Greenbushes' role in the transition to cleaner energy and shared how we work together each day for a better future. Talison and its contractors hosted stalls with interactive activities, project information, machinery displays and giveaways, while local community groups supported the event by assisting with food, music, LEGO activities, and information on community resources. 400 attendees had the opportunity to participate in a guided bus tour of the mine, which included a stop at the internal mine lookout - a crowd favourite. They were treated to a blast demonstration provided by Action Drill & Blast and observed Macmahon's team at work in the pit with their impressive load and haul machinery. A key highlight was the launch of our electric truck trial in partnership with Qube. To coincide with this, we announced with Qube the winners of our primary school design competition - congratulations to Willa (pictured), Mike, and Blayne! With his extensive experience in the resources sector, Rob is well-positioned to lead Talison into its next phase of growth. We’d like take the opportunity to acknowledge the significant contributions of former CEO Lorry Mignacca, who dedicated 33 remarkable years to the company, including 11 years as CEO. As the lithium industry continues to evolve, the role of Greenbushes in the global supply chain is now more important than ever. Our operations must not only expand but also remain agile and ready to adapt to changing conditions. Under Rob’s leadership, Talison will be well-equipped to navigate the challenges ahead and seize emerging opportunities. And that's a wrap for the 2024 WIMWA (Women in Mining and Resources WA ) Summit! Our team cannot wait to bring back their learnings to site. They thoroughly enjoyed connecting with people from across the mining industry and left feeling more a part of the community than ever before. This year's speakers inspired us with insights on building community, embracing curiosity, personal growth, and challenging the myth of meritocracy, among other thought-provoking topics. We were thrilled to be back at Greenbushes Primary School today for their annual science fair! Our team loved getting to share the fun side of the science behind what they do each day. We hope the experience sparked curiosity in the students and left a lasting impression to help drive the next generation of thinkers, explorers, and problem-solvers. Highlights included launching canister rockets, exploring the effects of liquid nitrogen on marshmallow texture, turning a lemon into a battery, and running relay stations on conservation and fauna. We also had a photo booth, magnetic separation and separation based on sizing (screening/sieving) activities and a pH indicator experiment.

Our Greenbushes Lithium Operation is officially the first mine in Australia to commit to an independent audit to the IRMA Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA). This is a significant step forward in our ongoing commitment to responsible mining and transparency. The decision to volunteer for this thorough audit process reflects Talison’s dedication to responsible mining practices and to engage openly with our stakeholders. The IRMA audit, conducted by SCS Global Services, will involve a comprehensive desktop review followed by an onsite audit. We’re proud that the work we do each day is helping contribute to the global transition to cleaner energy, while also supporting the communities that support us. As a residential mine, our workforce are valued members of surrounding communities, making community central to Talison’s journey. Throughout the 136 years Talison and its predecessors have been operating the Greenbushes mine, we've witnessed many changes, both locally and globally, and have continued to collaborate with community to navigate these changes.
