GREAT TO SEE! ▶ We saw a B2B weekly decline in job numbers throughout Sep. Week 1 we saw 41 jobs posted, Week 2 - 36, Week 3 - 31 and Week 4 - 29. That’s a 29% slide. Typically Oct/Nov are strong recruitment months with companies wanting to secure resources by EOY. Let’s see how it plays out. The QLD State Election on the 26th, and the US Election on the 5/11 will have an impact. I know many projects have halted across government departments, and US investors might be more reserved about their spending. ▶ We saw strong demand again for .Net/C# taking out the #1 spot with a 5% increase. The need for people leaders was apparent again, but we saw a 6% drop in technical leadership jobs, falling out of the top 5. ▶ It’s interesting to see C/C++ again, driven mainly by companies across the Aviation & Aerospace, Defence and Transport/Logistics/Supply Chain sectors. ▶ Node & Python made it on the list; I expect them both to be regular features. Node seems to be the go-to language on the back end for most software start-ups/scale-ups (Golang is gaining ground though), and Python a symptom of the big push towards AI/Data. I'm looking forward to having six months + of data to look over to make comparisons/better understand what languages are in demand, what sectors are hiring, % split between contract, perm, etc, and % of companies seeking talent that are QLD-based vs interstate/overseas. #️⃣ of Jobs posted - 236 (92% Perm, 3% Fixed-Term, 5% Contract, 1% Part-Time). Top 5 role functions; ▶ Lead - People (Team Lead, EM, Head of) - 17% ▶ Back End - .Net/C# - 16% ▶ Lead - Tech (Tech Lead, Staff, Snr Staff, Principal) - 10% ▶ (TIE) Back End - Java, Back End - C/C++ - 8% Top 5 Sectors; ▶ Software Development/SaaS - 39% ▶ ITS/Consulting - 25% ▶ Financial Services - 13% ▶ Government - 3% ▶ (TIE) Aviation & Aerospace, Retail/Hospo/Food & Beverage, Gambling, Travel/Tourism - 2% Other Insights; ▶ 30% of jobs were posted by local HQ'd companies vs 70% from interstate/overseas. I find this concerning; why is there such a gap? I suspect this will slowly shift as Brisbane keeps growing, the government/associated bodies continue investing in/supporting local startups/scale-ups (The Queensland Venture Capital Development Fund, for example), and we continue welcoming great talent from inter-state. ▶ The demand for both People & Tech leaders is interesting. From most reports, people in these positions are having a challenging experience securing jobs right now. If there’s a lot of opportunity, why is it hard? There has always been a surplus of candidates wanting to secure leadership roles in some capacity. It could be the senior engineer wanting to step up, an engineering manager wanting more responsibility, and ‘head of’ or VPs wishing to transition to C-LVL. So why is there a demand for leaders at the moment? I suspect it’s a sign of companies investing more in tech, perhaps going through an IT transformation, moving from on-prem to cloud, scaling up a new product or feature idea, etc. To undertake these initiatives, you must hire great leaders to drive your vision forward. It could also signify that companies are transitioning from conservation to spending mode, investing in new projects, hiring, forming new teams, etc. This could have a tremendous flow-on effect, let’s hope! ▶ No surprises to see .Net/C# is in the #2 spot. .Net/C# is the most commonly used language in SEQ & as such, skills in this space are in demand. The tradeoff is that there is an abundance of talent to compete against.
