About us
The Alannah & Madeline Foundation is a national not-for-profit organisation dedicated to keeping children and young people free from violence and trauma wherever they live, learn and play. On 28 April 1996, Alannah and Madeline Mikac, aged six and three, were tragically killed alongside their mother and 32 other people at Port Arthur in Tasmania. One year later, the Alannah & Madeline Foundation was launched in the girls’ honour by their father Walter Mikac AM and a small group of volunteers, driven by the belief that all children and young people should be able to live a happy and safe life, free from violence and trauma. Today our mission continues through care, prevention and advocacy – from supporting children experiencing family violence to online bullying and fighting for the rights of young people everywhere. After 25 years, that fight continues. The challenges facing children and young people may have changed, but our mission has not. We fight for their right to be safe, so their future is strong.

A strengths-based campaign to help teen boys build healthy relationships online: https://lnkd.in/dv64e2G6 With young people and Alannah & Madeline Foundation, we co-designed and developed a campaign with young people that reframed failure, built awareness and empathy, and provided skills to positively express intimacy. Crushed But Okay is a social-first campaign featuring young Aussie influencers reacting to real stories of these online interactions. Built with a strengths-based approach, the campaign gives teen boys the tools to safely, ethically process their emotions around rejection in their own language. Launched through Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat, Crushed But Okay reached more than 1,300,000 young people in its first two months. 💜 Happy World Social Work Day! 💜 Today, we want to celebrate the impact of social workers on children in our communities. At the Alannah & Madeline Foundation, the social workers in our Children Ahead and Trauma Consultancy Service teams work with children and young people recovering from trauma. Through Children Ahead, our team of social workers provide one-on-one therapeutic support where children can explore, understand and work through their feelings and experiences. And through our Trauma Consultancy services in early learning centres and ATLAS in schools, our Practitioners support educators to provide safe and supportive environments for children impacted by trauma and vulnerability. We are so grateful for the incredible work social workers do – showing empathy, care, and compassion every day. #SocialWorker #WSWD2025 International Federation of Social Workers

The Alannah & Madeline Foundation is deeply concerned by Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)’s Four Corners investigation into Australia’s early childhood sector. Every child has the right to feel safe – especially in environments designed for their care and development. With 1.4 million children in early childhood education and care (ECEC), it is unacceptable that gaps in safety and quality continue to place young children at risk. While the majority of ECEC centres and educators prioritise children’s needs, there is clearly more work to be done. Trauma-informed practices help educators support children's wellbeing and learning while preventing burnout. In partnership with Monash University, we developed the Trauma-Informed Practice: A Guide for Early Childhood Organisations – a free resource to help ECEC services embed trauma-informed approaches. ✔️ 86% of pilot participants found the guide useful ✔️ 50% reported it had already strengthened trauma-informed practices ✔️ 93% saw its potential for strengthening trauma-informed practice We support governments, regulators, and the sector to take immediate action to strengthen protections, embed trauma-informed approaches and ensure every child is safe. The Alannah & Madeline Foundation is proud to announce a new initiative, ‘Upholding Children’s Right to Privacy Online’, generously funded by The Ross Trust. This groundbreaking project aims to tackle the increasing exploitation of children’s personal information by digital technology platforms, addressing a growing concern for families, young people and school communities across Australia. Through this project, we will: 💜 Conduct Australia-centric research on children’s data privacy 💜️ Give young people and parents/carers a voice in shaping solutions 💜Advocate for stronger digital protection “Children have a fundamental right to privacy, yet in the digital world, their personal information is often collected and used without their understanding or consent. By working together - families, educators, policymakers, and young people themselves - we can create a digital environment that respects and safeguards their privacy, allowing them to safely explore, connect and thrive online.” - Alannah & Madeline Foundation CEO, Sarah Davies AM It’s time to put children’s safety before profits.
