#ICYMI We have expanded our Collaboration for Enhanced Research Impact (CERI) to 14 Centres of Research Excellence (CREs). At the start of this year, we welcomed the Centre for Safe Air and the CRE: Violence Perpetration: Profiling, Prediction and Prevention led by Professor tony butler. CERI continues to grow and provide a strong evidence-based voice and united front on issues such as equity, implementation, research capability and making the case for prevention. https://lnkd.in/gMWEQbHb #AirQuality #ViolencePrevention #PreventiveHealth

💡 A systems dynamics model, developed by Dr Simon Chiu at Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) and funded by the Prevention Centre, explores the likely population outcomes of a range of strategies to reduce obesity in children and adolescents. The model highlights the 'best buys' or low-cost, population-wide solutions for tackling childhood obesity. Explore the strategies through a live simulation tool, designed to help you examine different policy scenarios. https://lnkd.in/gqcJYvgv #ChildhoodObesity #PreventiveHealth

📣 NEWS JUST OUT: Global increase in supermarkets and convenience stores linked to rise in obesity A NEW global study released today - on World Obesity Day - by our team has revealed that some of the fastest growing countries in the world are set for dietary disaster as the trend of convenience store and supermarket dominance takes hold. The researchers, from Deakin University’s Global Centre for Preventive Health and Nutrition (GLOBE), in the Institute for Health Transformation (IHT) say the results of the study, published in Nature Food, reveal a seismic shift in the types of food stores springing up internationally over the past 15 years, with serious health implications for vulnerable low-and-middle-income countries. Analysing data from 97 countries on retail changes over the past 15 years, the team found: - A 23.6% increase in the density of chain convenience stores and supermarkets globally, with a 17.2% increase in food sales from these outlets. - The percentage of unhealthy food sales from chain convenience stores and supermarkets increased by 10.9%. - Grocery sales from digital retailers skyrocketed by 325% between 2014 and 2023 across 27 countries. The study's lead author, Dr Tailane Scapin, from Deakin University, said the study showed for the first time on a global scale that changes in the density of chain retailers directly influenced unhealthy food sales, leading to associated increases in obesity rates. The results are a serious call to action for governments worldwide to regulate the existing places we buy our food and drinks and to introduce new laws to ensure new businesses in this space are protecting our health - not harming it. Find out the full details on our website ➡️ bit.ly/41azwSq You'll also find a link to our interactive dashboard with all the latest data on global food retail environments worldwide. * Journal article authors: Tailane Scapin, Helena Romaniuk Alison Feeley Karla P. Today is #WorldObesityDay It is estimated that 800 million people around the world are living with obesity. Taking action on obesity is a critical step in reducing the global burden of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, cancer and other health conditions. This year, the World Obesity Federation and its members call on us to look at the systems that, when working together, can help prevent a significant rise in obesity. https://lnkd.in/dYT8iK44 #WOD2025 #ChangingSystems Join The Obesity Collective's event today 👉 https://lnkd.in/gsFgEVuY Learn more about a new system dynamics model approach to child and adolescent obesity prevention 👉 https://lnkd.in/gqcJYvgv

Smoking kills more than 24,000 Australians every year, or 66 people per day, which is significantly more than previous estimates, according to new research using data from our 45 and Up Study. But there's good news: quitting smoking at any age was beneficial and the increased risks of dying were largely avoided in those who gave up by the age of 45. Read more at: https://lnkd.in/g4q7mt-i
