These are my reflections after a great low carbon concrete workshop hosted by the Industrial and Logistics Sustainability Collaboration (ILSC)….the new cool kids on the sustainability block. 😎 Today, the split between embodied and operational carbon in our built assets is roughly 15:85. As the grid decarbonises this will flip. So the time is nigh to start designing for low embodied carbon. As we consider our climate related risks, low carbon concrete solutions are just as critical as electrification and other physical impacts. Current embodied carbon reduction targets of 20% needs to be more like 40% if we are to reach our Paris agreement targets. Collaboration and shared risk management is essential for meaningful innovation of low carbon design solutions. Thanks to Hudson Worsley, Simon Carter, Andrew Thai, Monica Richter, James Cahill and all others involved in pulling this gig together today. If you want to learn how to apply these principles to your next project reach out to The Footprint Company, TSA Riley or any of the above to learn more. #lowcarbonconcrete #sustainabledevelopment #progressbeforeperfection

🌟 We’re finalists for RICS Australia Awards 2024! 🌟 The Footprint Company has been recognised as a finalist for the Environmental Impact Award for our project quantifying the carbon and circular benefits of an adaptive reuse strategy for a speculative office fitout at Grosvenor Place Sydney. Key Achievements: · 24% lower carbon footprint compared to business-as-usual · Identified initiatives that reduce an additional 16% of carbon emissions reduction initiatives Applying RICS' best practice whole life carbon assessment (WLCA) principles and ICMS-3 international standards, our work now guides future low carbon tenancy refits at Grosvenor Place. Thank you to everyone involved in this journey. Let’s continue to push the boundaries of sustainability and reduce the carbon footprint of our built assets. #RICSAwards #EnvironmentalImpact #TheFootprintCompany #Sustainability #AdaptiveReuse #CarbonReduction Dr. Caroline Noller Tanvi Patel John Derrick Rovier Estepa Ruth Hendy Paul Edwards, GAICD Gemma Wilson Jason Zafiriadis Alistair Coulstock Julia Halioua Mehul Jamwal

Absolutely agree with Clinton Rakich. Climate risks are real, and we must measure, manage, mitigate, and mobilise to address them. Reducing carbon emissions is crucial. You can make a significant impact when you adopt sustainable practices like incorporating low-carbon design in construction and transitioning to renewables. Reach out to explore how we can help reduce the carbon footprint of your organisation, projects and/or assets. #Decarbonisation #Climate #ClimateChange #Sustainability #LowCarbonDesign #GreenBuilding Paul Edwards, GAICD Alistair Coulstock Gemma Wilson Jason Zafiriadis Julia Halioua Tanvi Patel Mehul Jamwal Adam Garthwaite Emma Haselden

For the first time we have now had 12 consecutive months above the critical +1.5degC threshold for global warming. Above +1.5degC our economic, environmental and social systems will routinely be pushed outside of the coping ranges established up to the 20th century. We urgently need to measure, manage, mitigate and mobilise around our physical and transition climate risks. Small steps to adapt with nature now will soften the impacts of future climate events. Reach out to understand more, happy to discuss. #climate #nature #climatechange #adaptation #resilience

We’re pleased to see Australia’s Building Ministers growing commitment to Climate Resilience and Net Zero in the Built Environment. Starting in 2025, the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) will include climate resilience as a key objective, developing National Construction Code (NCC) requirements to reduce the impact of natural disasters. Building ministers and the ABCB are shaping a new direction for NCC 2025, encouraging practical and cost-effective initiatives aimed at reducing displacement and rebuilding costs after natural disasters. The NCC 2025 will also introduce a voluntary pathway for commercial buildings to measure and report embodied carbon. The ABCB will also explore incorporating a minimum standard for embodied carbon in NCC 2028 to support net zero goals. Australia’s commitment to climate resilience and net zero in the built environment is growing, however more work is required. Through collaboration, practical implementation, and innovation, both public and private sectors need to pave the way for a sustainable and resilient future. Let’s connect to discuss how we can contribute to this essential transition thought our climate and carbon advisory teams. 🌱 #ClimateResilience #PathtoNetZero #BuiltEnvironment #CarbonAdvisory #ESG Article: https://lnkd.in/gj-r5ykk Paul Edwards, GAICD Alistair Coulstock Clinton Rakich Gemma Wilson Jason Zafiriadis Julia Halioua Tanvi Patel Mehul Jamwal Emma Haselden

This episode of #ExpertsPick, we’re comparing two common materials: Precast concrete with brickwork cladding vs. rammed earth. According to our carbon expert, Mehul Jamwal, his low-carbon pick is ✨ rammed earth ✨. Here’s why: - Locally sourced: Made from local materials, reducing carbon emissions and construction waste. - Incredibly durable: Weather-resistant and built to last. - Thermal efficiency: High thermal mass helps regulate indoor temperatures by absorbing heat during the day and releasing it at night. 5 strategies to reduce embodied carbon emissions in the residential sector: 1. Refurbish Existing Dwellings 🛠️: Renovating an old home instead of building a new one can cut emissions by 50% for detached homes. 2. Create Shared Spaces 🌳: Developing communal gardens or BBQ areas in residential complexes can promotes resource efficiency and fosters community living. 3. Reuse Existing Materials ♻️: Salvaging bricks and fixtures from demolished buildings to use in new constructions reduces waste and gives old materials a new life. 4. Design for Deconstruction and Disassembly 🧩: Constructing buildings with easily removable components allows for future recycling and reuse, minimising waste. 5. Build Smaller Dwellings with Intelligent Layouts 📐: Designing compact homes with efficient layouts to maximise space utilisation while reducing material usage. A few weeks ago, our very own Julia Halioua joined Lendlease's Ann Austin on stage at the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) Circular Economy Housing Conference to tackle the big question: How can our residential sector make a real impact with circular solutions? Key Challenges Identified: ⚠️ Inconsistent methodology for lifecycle assessments for homes, making it difficult to establish benchmarks ⚠️ Major residential sustainability frameworks lack upfront carbon requirements, creating gaps and underestimated carbon impacts. ⚠️ A shortage of resources for low carbon design and educational materials, stalling sustainable progress for the sector. But amidst these challenges, we see huge opportunities! The link between building circularity and decarbonisation is not only powerful, but it can also drive cost reductions when executed well. Ready to reduce the footprint of your next project? Reach out to The Footprint Company or TSA Riley today! #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #Decarbonisation #AHURI #LowCarbonDesign #BuildingCircularity #TheFootprintCompany #TSARiley
