Jobs and Skills Australia has released their annual occupation shortage list, confirming there is a critical national shortage of planners 🚨 📉This shows a worsening trend from 2023’s reported ‘regional shortage’ and 2022’s ‘no shortage’. 👉Swipe across to see the break down of data in each State and Territory. This escalating shortage comes at a time when Australia is grappling with complex planning challenges, including housing affordability, population growth and climate resilience. The growing demand for skilled planners to address these issues has outstripped supply, leaving many employers struggling to fill vital roles, says PIA CEO, Matt Collins MPIA. PIA is calling for urgent action to reverse this trend, starting with greater support for planning education, scholarships, and initiatives to encourage more Australians to pursue careers in urban and regional planning. Earlier this year, PIA launched a new Become A Planner campaign (www.becomeaplanner.com.au) to encourage more people to choose careers in urban and regional planning, but further action is needed to tackle this growing problem. We're excited to share the Planning Institute of Australia's new Advocacy Framework – our strategic roadmap to amplify the voice of planners and advocate for good planning and great communities. Developed with input from PIA’s Division Presidents and Policy Committee chairs, this framework is designed to make our advocacy efforts more influential and impactful. Many planners have told us they want PIA to be a stronger voice in the conversation with governments and the media, and this Advocacy Framework will help us achieve this goal. The framework sets out five key strategies: 1. Addressing and focussing on the big issues, like housing and climate action. 2. Engaging decision-makers to advocate in the public interest. 3. Responding effectively to government proposals through quality submissions. 4. Building trust in the planning profession. 5. Investing in our policy and advocacy capacity. A shortage of urban and regional planners has prompted senior leaders across Queensland’s development, housing and local government sectors to raise concerns over ongoing University Planning Degree closures. The University of Southern Queensland is planning to suspend offering their Planning Degree from next year, which follows recent course closures at Bond University and James Cook University. Key industry leaders have backed the call for State Government to step in, including the Property Council of Australia Queensland, Local Government Association of Queensland, Master Builders Queensland, UDIA Queensland and Q Shelter. Over the last two days PIA has been at the Australian Geography Teachers Association (AGTA) National Conference in Garramilla, Darwin, sharing why planning is an exciting, rewarding and impactful career 💥 PIA’s National General Manager Karen Goldsmith, was joined by PIA NT President Catriona Tatam MPIA and Allison Hooper MPIA yesterday chatting to Conference attendees about PIA’s new Become A Planner Campaign. 🎓 We know that one important link in encouraging high school students to explore a career in planning is through their teachers and careers advisors. We’ve been working hard to increase our presence amongst these key influencers. We're particularly encouraging schools to request a visit from passionate planners to come and speak with students about the incredible opportunities a career in planning presents - so that students can hear it directly from those who are have gone before them! If you haven’t explored the #becomeaplanner campaign yet (or signed up to take part in school visits) head to the campaign website to get involved 👉 www.becomeaplanner.com.au
