TheMHS Learning Network Inc. is an international learning network for improving mental health services in Australia & New Zealand. TheMHS events bring together people from across Australia and New Zealand to stimulate debates that challenge the boundaries of present knowledge and ideas about mental health care and mental health systems. We believe in promoting positive attitudes about mental health & mental illness. Our forums foster the exchange of ideas, focus discussion on workforce development, and are a great place for networking and debate for professionals, consumers, families and carers, managers, researchers and policy-makers. ------------------------------------------------------------- TheMHS Learning Network runs 2 annual events: TheMHS Conference The annual TheMHS Conference is held in a different city around Australia & New Zealand each year and attracts approximately 1,000 delegates annually. The Conference is strongly interdisciplinary & multisectoral – making TheMHS Conference the place to be for networking in the mental health sector. Our delegates come from a diverse range of personal and professional backgrounds including clinicians, managers, consumers, carers, researchers, educators and policy makers. We know that it is important to hear not just from researchers and clinicians, but also from consumers, carers and service managers. Our program reflects the diversity of the mental health sector and our keynotes are selected to bring the very best and latest insights into issues of mental health and wellbeing. TheMHS Summer Forum TheMHS Summer Forum is a two day educational program that examines the obstacles to good mental health services, highlights recent research, sets out the challenges, and focuses on policies, programs and directions for the future. Each year a different “hot” topic in mental health is chosen and speakers with expertise in the field are invited to present at the Forum.

Philippa Hemus from St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne gave a fantastic presentation recently at the TheMHS Learning Network Inc. conference about co-creating a consumer engagement strategy. Graphic recording is such a powerful co-creation tool, and it was wonderful to see some of the graphic recordings that we created to support the co-creation process appear as slides in her presentation. The purpose of this award is to capture, elevate and honour the lived experience informed influence and impact of an individual that demonstrate passion and vision for change. In Canberra to attend TheMHS Learning Network Inc. Conference recently and During The Mental Health Service (TheMHS) Awards of Australia and New Zealand Awards Ceremony, I was proud to be presented with TheMHS Lived Experience Changemaker (Carers/ Family/ Whanau) Award. The award prompted me to reflect on a number of things and I kept coming back to the Socrates quote "The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new". There are many good people and supports in the carer space, mental health and suicide prevention along with a common theme of the systems being hard to navigate, reactive and expensive. Lived experience should sit in the drivers seat of change and include a wide range of voices, even the quiet ones. The World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation Australia presents a special seminar from international speaker Dr Roberto Mezzina, direct from Trieste Italy, on Wednesday 25 September 2024 at 5pm-6pm (AEST). Dr Mezzina led the development of the Trieste Mental Health services, a network of community services with the aim of achieving recovery and social inclusion. Dr Mezzina will provide an overview of the Trieste approach and its recent application in the United Kingdom. Fifteen Awards across eleven categories were presented by TheMHS Awards Ambassador, Julie Millard AM and TheMHS Awards founder Roger Gurr AM, to individuals and organisations at this week’s ‘Finding Common Ground’ Conference Awards Ceremony, in Canberra hosted by TheMHS Learning Network. The Commission had our Advocacy & Reform team members attend the TheMHS Learning Network Inc. Conference in Canberra last week. Senior Advisor Michael O'Connor delivered an insightful presentation on the experiences of Community Treatment Orders (CTOs) in New South Wales. Shedding light on the impacts of compulsory treatment, Michael drew on perspectives from those directly affected, their supporters, and service providers, offering recommendations for enhancing co-design activities within government frameworks. We also had Acting NSW Mental Health Commissioner Deborah Howe join a session discussing "Mental Health Commissions: Difference, Common Ground and Change." In light of recent natural disasters and challenges faced by NSW communities, including devastating bushfires and floods, it is more important than ever to address the mental health impacts of such events. Through initiatives such as the Peer Navigation Project, which was designed to explore how individuals with lived experience of mental health issues could leverage their deep community connections and familiarity with local services. The rise of peer workers, who share their lived experience and community knowledge to support others, has proven to be instrumental in providing compassionate and community-oriented support. First time attending TheMHS Learning Network Inc. Conference in Canberra last week and it did not disappoint. The abstract we submitted and the symposium we held, was probably one of the most meaningful presentations I have ever been apart of. Vulnerability will always be a strength we carry as Lived experience workforce members and I hope this is only the beginning of opening up the conversation.
