The third and final intake of 2025 Graduate Nurses has arrived! 🏥🎉 Another 48 fresh-faced grads have joined the RMH, rounding out our Graduate Nurse Program to 168-strong for the year! Among the 48 new grads, we chatted with Nicki Chigonde, Kris Smith, and Caitlin Mullins (pictured L-R), and they shared their reasons for stepping into nursing. Nicki, who grew up in Zimbabwe, saw nursing as an opportunity to develop skills she hopes to take back home one day. "Healthcare in Zimbabwe isn’t as well-equipped as it is here, so I wanted to learn in a strong system like Australia’s, which is what brought me here.” Born in the US, Kris was drawn to the hands-on, people-focused nature of nursing. “I love hands-on work and working with people—nursing gives me an avenue to do both,” he said. For Caitlin, nursing was a natural career choice. “I’ve always had a passion for helping and supporting people, and nursing felt like the best way to do that." All three saw the RMH as the right place to launch their nursing careers, and we are pleased to have such talented and passionate professionals joining our nursing workforce. A very warm welcome to the graduate nurses joining the RMH! 💙

Advancing healthcare for everyone, every day
About us
The Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) began in 1848 as Victoria’s first public hospital. And while we only had 10 beds to our name, we had the community of Melbourne behind us, and we were ready to provide the best possible care for those in need. Health care has changed a lot since then, but our desire to serve the people of Victoria with an appropriately skilled and compassionate workforce has not. We’re still at the forefront of innovative research and discoveries – working hard to redefine the highest standards of care. Excellence is something we strive for together. We’re committed to working alongside our partners in care, research and education, so we can shape the next generation of leading clinicians, scientists, researchers and educators. We’re for Melbourne’s health and have considered how we can best contribute to the health needs of the community, which is reflected in our purpose, values and community promise: Our purpose: Advancing healthcare for everyone, every day Our community promise: Always there when it matters most Our values: People first. Lead with kindness. Excellence together. The RMH includes our Parkville, Royal Park and Elizabeth St sites, mental health sites across the northwestern suburbs of Melbourne, and the world-renowned Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, which is a joint venture with the University of Melbourne.

Meet Professor Neeraj Bhala, the RMH’s new Academic Director and Head of Gastroenterology! Prof. Bhala joins us from the Nottingham Digestive Disease Centre at the Queens Medical Centre, and has previously worked at Nottingham University Hospital and Nottingham Medical School in the UK and in New Zealand. With an extensive career spanning the UK and New Zealand, Prof. Bhala brings a wealth of experience in clinical leadership and global research, including contributions to The Lancet’s Global Burden of Disease series. For Prof. Bhala, leadership is about creating a supportive, values-driven environment where healthcare professionals at all levels can thrive. “I think about sustainability—helping the next generation of healthcare professionals grow, whether they’re doctors, nurses, or administrative staff. Supporting the workforce’s wellbeing is just as important to me as addressing immediate clinical challenges.” Prof. Bhala is eager to apply his global perspective to patient care and research here at the RMH. “I’m passionate about improving quality and safety in managing gastrointestinal and liver conditions, but also about prevention. Even small advances in common conditions can have a huge impact on patient outcomes” Prof. Bhala said. Welcome to the RMH Professor Neeraj Bhala! We’re proud to have you!

We are proud and honoured to share that the Royal Melbourne Hospital has been recognised as one of Australia's best hospitals according to Newsweek's World's Best Hospitals 2024 ranking 🥉 This recognition is credit to the dedication, innovation and diversity of experience that our RMH staff bring to deliver world-class healthcare. The rankings are based on an extensive evaluation process, including an online survey of thousands of medical experts (doctors, hospital managers and health care professionals), patient experience data, hospital quality metrics, and patient reported outcomes. In Australia, the RMH is third amongst 70 health providers, and globally, we’re now ranked 96th! We'd also like to acknowledge our colleagues at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney and The Alfred in Victoria, who have made the list. Their recognition is well deserved and a testament to the incredible health network we have in Australia. We can do so much more when we work together. An extended shout out to the other Victorian healthcare orgs represented in the Australian top 10, St Vincent's Health Australia and Austin Health, both here in Victoria, too. Congratulations 🎉 A big thank you to all the staff at the RMH working to make us one of the best hospitals in Australia and worldwide. And a thank you to our patients and consumers for your trust and ongoing feedback to help us improve to offer you the best care possible. This truly is #theMelbourneway 💙

These three women powerfully embody the spirit of International Women’s Day #womenoftheRMH 💙 If you’re fortunate enough to spend time with this group, you’ll observe the mutual respect, tenacity, and sense of contribution to others that drives them all. Andriana, Julia and Houda work as a team to move the dial in the Clinical Assistance space. Julia, Clinical Assistant and part of the RMH for 36 years, says, "I came to Australia back in 1987 with zero speaking English, but a woman named Philomena gave me an opportunity to work in the health sector as CA even though I was a lawyer. It's amazing how you remember the first woman who influenced your life in this country." Andriana, CA Coordinator, says she always admired women who empowered her to be confident. "From seeing others doing it with me, I know the value in teaching my CA's to be confident, learn to speak up and not to be shy to show they are smart." As for Houda, CA Coordinator and Trainer, she is always encouraging the team. "Stay positive, stay strong and become better professionals every day. I tell them all, 'Be the best to yourself and to others'." Thank you to these exemplary team players for contributing to our vision to advance health for everyone, everyday. #IWD #womenoftheRMH #forALLwomenandgirls

Happy Friday, RMH Community! ☀️ Meet Jo - our Deputy Director of Pharmacy (Quality) and Lead Pharmacist for Medication Safety 💙 Jo is passionate about safety, leadership, and flexibility in the workplace - especially when it comes to women returning from parental leave. Until recently, there had never been a job-share in the pharmacy department at this level, but with the support of leadership, Jo and her co-Deputy have made it work. “I feel like we're getting better and better at supporting our staff in these ways - I’m really fortunate that I have a supportive department that allows people to be flexible,” she says. “With me stepping up to Deputy Director, I'm really conscious of that and supporting flexibility in terms of my experience. I hope that that just continues to evolve further and we become even more supportive.” In a female-dominated workplace, Jo said this is particularly important. “Pharmacy and health, there’s a very high number of females working in those industries,” she says. “So for me, what I hope will be different for the next generation is that women are involved further in terms of support when coming back from parental leave.” #IWD #womenoftheRMH #forALLwomenandgirls
