The bushfire season is upon us, and it is forecast to be a hot and dry summer in Australia. Architects and builders should be considering how they approach bushfire protection in current and future projects. The NCC2022 changes to building code that came into effect on 1 May include extending bushfire requirements from Class 1, 2 and 3 (residential type buildings) to now include early childhood centres, primary and secondary schools, aged care, as well as health care buildings. Trento Fuller Managing Director Luke Trento has recently been presentiong to some of South Australia’s top architects, regulatory agencies and consultants, summarising the current status of the 2022 changes to the building code. FACULTY Design, Chris Sale, Das Studio, studio gram, City Collective, SMFA - Stallard Meek Flightpath Architects, Brown Falconer, Thomson Rossi, DASH Architects, Department for Infrastructure and Transport, Amy Grundy, Michael Smith and William Cowell from Architology Architects, Tom Doull, and Teo Verbi have all taken up the opportunity for a comprehensive update on code changes such as Livable Housing, SDA and Changing Place Assessments. The NCC2022 adoption date was 1 May 2023, however some sections of the new code have been delayed, with a final decision due in October 2023. Affected areas of construction include external waterproofing and bushfire protection, condensation management and energy efficiency.
