HOW HOUSING CO-OPERATIVES WORK Co-ops are a community-driven housing solution made up of members who work together to create the security of ownership and the affordability of renting. Members live independently in their own homes. They manage the housing together and share the benefits of co-operative housing management. Co-ops give members a sense of agency and empowerment, which contribute to positive health, education and employment outcomes. #cooperative #coophousing #positivebenefits #policyblueprint Common Equity Housing Limited (CEHL) Common Equity United Housing Co-operative ltd. What Australian Governments can do to support the growth of co-operative housing. 1. Encourage investment in housing co-operatives as a form of institutional build-to-rent housing. 2. Re-instate a dedicated stream of funding for rental housing co-operatives. Dedicated funding for housing co-ops was available in the 1990s, when most existing Australian housing co-operatives were formed. 3. Allocate funds from the Social Housing Accelerator, the Housing Australia Future Fund and the expanded National Housing Infrastructure Facility to build the supply of co-op housing stock for registered community housing providers. 4. Remove planning barriers to housing that is for low-moderate income earners, such as co-operative housing. #HousingCoops #AffordableHousingAustralia #CoopHousingGrowth Common Equity Housing Limited (CEHL) Common Equity United Housing Co-operative ltd. Why do people choose to live in co-operative housing? Rental housing co-operatives offer an alternative to private home ownership, the private rental market, and public housing. Co-ops are a community-led form of social housing run by the people who live in it, allowing people to ‘rent like they own’. Each housing co‑op is a registered business, representing communities of people who unite voluntarily to achieve long-term, secure housing solutions. Guided by the international co‑operative principles, housing co-operatives operate with shared values of individual responsibility, mutual help, democracy, equality, equity, and solidarity.

An incredible day of learning at the ACHA 2024 Co-operative Housing Summit! 🌟 A huge thank you to everyone who made this event possible! From our platinum sponsor, KeyInvest, to the dedicated attendees — your support and participation created an unforgettable experience. A special shout-out to Stephanie Miller of Common Equity Housing SA Ltd and her team for hosting. Our keynote speakers truly set the stage for a day full of insights: Tim Ross of CHF shared valuable lessons on the power of co-operative housing to build resilient communities in Canada. Sidsel Grimstad and Melina Morrison launched the European Study Report and shared valuable lessons learned by the tour participants earlier this year. Professor Wendy Stone talked about the learnings she and her colleagues gained during the three-year project study on Australian Housing Co-operatives. . The workshops were full of practical takeaways for co-operative housing communities. Thank you to the presenters, Peter Sibly, Nasteha Mohamud, Molly Kendall, and Amy Lees. At the conclusion of the day Liz Thomas delivered the closing remarks and launched the Australian Co-operative Housing Alliance policy blue print, which calls for a dedicated community housing funding stream to grow co-op housing to 10% of Australia’s social housing stock. Key takeaways from the day: Co-operatives can lead change: Together, Australia's co-operatives have the power to address housing inequality. Advocacy at all levels of government is essential. Collaboration is key: Fostering partnerships is essential for growth, including between co-ops, members, government and the wider community. Sustainability is the future: Co-op housing must prioritise sustainability in design and governance to create lasting impact. A special shout-out to all the attendees, both in person and online! Your engagement, questions, and enthusiasm made the summit dynamic and insightful. 🙌 We're excited to build on the conversations sparked at the summit and continue working together to strengthen the co-operative housing movement. #ACHASummit #CooperativeHousing #Placemaking #Governance #ESG #CoopHousing #Sustainability #LearningTogether Jess Davies-Huynh (she/her) Heidi Claus Louise Miller-Frost MP - B App Sc, MA, MPH, MBA, FAICD Craig Brooke Fiona Herman Alyce Holmes Hayley Clark Karen Fixsen Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) Common Equity Housing Limited (CEHL) Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals (BCCM) The Co-op Federation United Housing Co-operative ltd. What is a housing co-op? How does it differ from other forms of housing ownership? A housing co-op sits between renting and ownership. Residents have the affordability of renting and the security and agency of owning. The image shows housing tenure types in Australia. A housing co-operative is membership-based, with each member in the housing co-operative granted the right to occupy a housing unit. Housing co-ops come in many forms. Some are townhouses and small buildings with just a handful of units; others are large apartment-style buildings with hundreds of units. Some co-ops are rental, whereas others are member-owned, also known as equity co-ops. The fact that there are so many variants is an indication of how co-operative housing is an adaptable and flexible model that can work in many different circumstances. Many older women are stuck in a vicious cycle – too wealthy for public housing but too financially strained for private rentals or home ownership. As they age, they deserve safe, affordable homes where they can continue to participate in their communities. Governments must build more social housing and also invest in affordable housing models such as tenant-managed and cooperative housing initiatives that provide secure housing alternatives.
