We were excited to bring the law to students today at the County Court of Victoria! As part of our School Law Talks program, we arrange for speakers to meet with local VCE Legal Studies students. Our speakers share their professional life and experiences in the law, and link the lessons learnt in classrooms with the real world. Thank you to the representatives from Victorian Bar and Juries Victoria, and Former Deputy Premier of Victoria Rob Hulls for contributing to the program. Congratulations Tenants Victoria on your 50th! 🎂🎉 It was great to attend the celebration and hear how Tenants Victoria has evolved. From grassroots activism in 1974 to now, they've directly helped more than half a million renters by advising, educating and empowering renters. But they promise their work is not done yet! "50 is significant. It marks establishment and survival, experience and wisdom. " - Lynne Haultain, VLF Executive Director. Tenants Victoria's 50th is part of a broader suite of legal organisations reaching milestones this year. “There’s a sectoral voice of frustration.” We spoke to Northern Community Legal Centre 's Jenni Smith and Australian Muslim Women's Centre for Human Rights 's Dr Kate Hammond about their latest research project, Barriers to Access. With funding from a VLF grant, the project investigated the experiences of migrant and refugee women when applying for a Family Violence Intervention Order. The project found that in some instances, courts, police and sector services refused to provide assistance to migrant and refugee victims/survivors in their FVIO application process. "Safety must always be a priority over efficiency." A huge thank you to Tania McKenna, Northern Community Legal Centre , Dr Kate Hammond, Australian Muslim Women's Centre for Human Rights , and our own Dr Hugh McDonald for presenting yesterday's insightful Research Network webinar exploring the complex balance between embracing technological systems and not further marginalising those most in need. "Technological systems reform can potentially enhance access to justice, but not equally for everyone." If you missed it or would like to revisit the content, a full recording is now available: https://zurl.co/MvDQ
