Why are fuel additives no longer optional? Today, ultra-low sulphur fuels are blended from multiple sources which dramatically compromises their shelf life…sometimes there’s no shelf-life at all. The sad fact is that as soon as blended, before they hit your tanks, fuels are already in such a state where no engine can fully extract its full energy potential. The result? Fuel inefficiency of around 5% in open cut mining with even more in power plants and underground mining. The signs of compromised fuel are DPF’s requiring constant regenerations, excessive consumption of urea and, more simply, black smoke. These are all indicators that the combustion is incomplete and fuel is being wasted. Which means money is also being wasted. Modern fossil fuels are already complex and they are about to get even more complicated as industrial users begin to adopt blends of fossil with renewable fuels in order to meet their decarbonisation objectives.
