MEDIA RELEASE AIR NIUGINI WELCOMES AN ADDITIONAL Q400 INTO THE FLEET Air Niugini welcomed its 4th Q400 to Port Moresby over the weekend (Saturday 19th October) as part of the airline’s fleet transition program. The acquisition of this aircraft, PXT was fully funded by the National Government through the Public Investment Program(PIP) with the support of Kumul Consolidated Holdings(KCH). The aircraft costs about 7 million USD. There was water salute as part of tradition to welcome PXT as it touched down at Jacksons airport. Air Niugini Chief Executive Officer, Mr Gary Seddon and part of his management team were at the airport to receive the aircraft. Mr Seddon said it has been 10 years since Air Niugini last purchased an aircraft and the acquisition is a testament to the airline’s commitment to improving and expanding its services across the country. He thanked the Marape/Rosso government for the funding support through the PIP and also KCH for its continuous invaluable assistance. Mr Seddon said, “This aircraft will play a crucial role in improving our operating efficiency and schedule reliability on domestic routes. The advanced technology and versality are ideally suited for our operation needs, ensuring Air Niugini continues to provide safe, efficient, and reliable services to the people of Papua New Guinea.” “I would like to extend our sincere thanks to the government, particularly our Hon. Minster for State Owned Enterprises William Duma for championing this program as well as chairman and managing director and the team at KCH for their unwavering support in making this possible.” Mr Seddon said. Once all Civil Aviation Safety Authority, PNG(CASA PNG) regulatory requirements are complete, PXT is expected to commence commercial operations by November. This is the fourth Q400 in Air Niugini fleet. The airline is looking at a total 8 to replace the current Dash 8 classics. Q400s are high in demand in this region, they are substantially larger, much faster, more comfortable, with vastly superior and more powerful engines and propellers, and carry up to 76 passengers, about 30 more than Dash8 classics. The Q400s are ideally suitable for operations in PNG environment. Ends…// Corporate Communications Department Monday 21st October, 2024

  • Power meri stret! Congratulations Elsie Albert for an outstanding season. As a prop for the Parramatta Eels, Elsie averaged 127 run metres, 18 tackles, and 5 tackle breaks each game. This translated to a tackle efficiency of 93%. She's smashing gender and cultural barriers literally and figuratively! Well done, lewa. #womeninsport #thisispng #nrlw

  • Wow, what a win for the PNG Orchids! Not only from a sporting lens, but culturally too👏🏾 #womeninsport #thisispng #nrl

2 September 2024 | TAHNEE NORRIS APPOINTED AS HEAD COACH OF THE SANTOS PAPUA NEW GUINEA ORCHIDS Women’s rugby league in Papua New Guinea has received another enormous boost with the appointment of the legendary Tahnee Norris as Head Coach of the Santos PNG Orchids. A skillful and hard-running forward, Norris has had an incredible career as both a player and coach. Named in the NRL Women’s Team of the Decade in 2013, Norris is one of the greatest players of all time having played 13 matches for Queensland and an amazing 32 Test matches for the Australian Jillaroos, making her the most capped player of all time. After retiring in 2013, Norris moved into coaching with immediate success, guiding the Burleigh Bears to an incredible six Premierships in seven years between 2015 and 2021, in addition to taking on the role of assisting Steve Folkes with the Jillaroos (2014 – 2016). Further success followed at State of Origin level, leading Queensland to series victories in her first year in 2021, and consecutive wins in the 2023 and 2024 series. Norris was last month honoured for her glittering career by being inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame. PNGRFL CEO, Stanley Hondina, acknowledged how important the appointment of Norris was for the game in PNG: “Firstly, we extend our thanks for the contribution and efforts of Ben Jeffries as the Head Coach of the Orchids over the past seasons including getting the team to the World Cup Semi-Final in 2022. We wish Ben all the success for the remainder of the NRLW season with the Knights.”  “Tahnee has had an incredible career as both a player and coach, and we are extremely proud to name her as the new Head Coach of the Santos PNG Orchids. “Wherever she has gone, Tahnee has proven to be a winner. As a player she won every honour in the game, and she has taken that winning mindset into coaching where she has continued to have amazing success. “Her knowledge of the game is second to none and she will bring a lifetime of experience and excellence to this role. “We believe that she is the perfect coach to help develop what is an extremely talented Orchids squad.” Tahnee Norris was excited about what lay ahead for the women’s game in PNG: ‘This a fantastic time to be involved in rugby league and I’m both honoured and excited to be able to work with the Orchids. “I have seen the depth of talent there is in the country, and I see the passion that the team plays with every time they take the field to represent their nation. “If we can work hard together and continue to develop as a team, there is no limit on what this group of players can achieve. “I look forward to starting in the role and getting to meet all of the squad.” ENDS

In Australia, like in Papua New Guinea, we celebrate different denominations and discriminate against none. We value religious freedom and freedom of assembly as intrinsic to the democratic fabric of both our countries. Members of the High Commission community joined thousands of faithful this morning at the Holy Mass hosted by His Holiness Pope Francis in Port Moresby. Religious values have the power to bring people together, to inspire positive change, and to build stronger, more resilient communities. Australia congratulates the Government of Papua New Guinea for hosting this Apostolic visit by His Holiness Pope Francis, which will bring hope, unity, and peace. This is truly a momentous occasion for Papua New Guinea.
