On International Women’s Day, our Chair of Management Board in South Africa, Nolitha Fakude, delivered a compelling address at the Regenesys Corporate Education’ LeadersWalk event, convened under the theme - Empowering Leaders: Unlocking Potential, Driving Change. Speaking on the subject of Corporate Activism - Leading Change in the Boardroom and Beyond, Nolitha emphasised the critical role of corporate activism in accelerating gender equality and reinforced the need for organisations to move beyond symbolic commitments towards deliberate, measurable action in enabling inclusive workplaces. Aligned with this year’s #InternationalWomensDay theme, “Accelerate Action for Gender Equality,” Nolitha highlighted that diversity and inclusion are not just moral imperatives but strategic business priorities. She called on leaders to actively address systemic barriers, ensure equitable career progression for women, close the gender pay gap, and embed inclusion as a fundamental part of organisational culture. Leadership, as she described it, is a “boardroom dance”—the ability to navigate complex corporate environments while remaining steadfast in the pursuit of meaningful change. However, individual efforts are not enough. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the essential role women play in shaping our societies, industries, and futures. At Kumba Iron Ore, we are privileged to have a team of extraordinary women whose expertise, dedication, and leadership are instrumental to our success. From leading innovative projects to ensuring sustainable practices, they are at the forefront of our operations, embodying excellence, and resilience. I was pleased when during our recent Roadshows at our Operations, our Women in Mining committees led by Kutlwano, Zonke, and Motlatso launched our wonderful maternity PPE apparel and hampers, ensuring that the women of Kumba feel supported, valued, and empowered at every stage of their journey. I also celebrate Thando and Nicole who received their well-deserved Minerals Council Women in Mining Sustainability Heroes Award from the Minerals Council South Africa this week for their contributions to sustainable development, decarbonisation, and social impact in the mining industry which are both significant and far-reaching. I’m proud of Leandra who was recently featured in Financial Minds Magazine for her outstanding leadership and contributions to the financial sector as well as her strategies for success outlined in the new book by KC Rottok Chesaina,"BEYOND THE BEANS! Strategies for Success from South Africa's Top Financial Minds". I’m also excited to highlight that Matshidiso Gama walked away with the Top Women Young Achiever award in the 2024 Standard Bank Top Women™️Awards, and in addition, Kumba was nominated in the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion category.
