As you've no doubt gathered, we're big believers that the skills attained when undertaking a PhD continue to be relevant and useful in careers beyond academia. But a key question in this Story from Beyond Academia is whether a PhD set you up for success in leadership. Susan McGinty, Dr holds a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry and is a leadership expert, recognised as Women in STEM Leadership’s 2023 Leader of the Year, an Emerging Tech Leader in the 2023 Women’s Agenda Leadership Awards, and Founder and CEO of Aya Leadership, and we talked to her about just this question! Susan shares many fascinating insights from her personal career story, and her take on academia to leadership. We discussed cultural norms related to leadership in academia, and how being aware of these and planning for leadership could help if you’re interested in this path post-PhD. https://lnkd.in/gS-M8_bR #phdcareers #altac #beyondacademia #phd #leavingacademia #academiatoindustry #leadership #interviews

“[the bosses I’ve had in industry] will guard my time, they say they want to make sure that I’m not working too hard, not working in the evenings. I’d never heard that before. They’re trying to ensure their staff aren’t burned out.” Melanie Zeppel recently sat down with Jonathan to talk about how her academic career in plant physiology helped set her up for success for a new career in forestry and sustainable landscape investment. Melanie tells us about how her domain-specific knowledge and transferable skills carried over to this new context, how attitudes toward work-life balance differ between sectors, and a whole bunch of actionable advice that you can use in your career pivot. Thanks Melanie for joining us! https://lnkd.in/gi6XSDPt

Here’s some more advice from someone who has successfully navigated the transition from academia to industry - in this case it’s from physical chemistry to financial consulting. There’s some good advice in this article, particularly around the changes you’ll need to make to your communication style when moving into a non-academic context, although we’re on the fence about the advice to reach out to hiring managers before submitting an application. Not every hiring manager will be a fan of this approach (and some may have to follow strict protocols that preclude meeting with you in advance), so don’t be upset if your approach falls flat. https://lnkd.in/dXVmTEiM #nature #phdcareers #altac #beyondacademia #phd #leavingacademia #academiatoindustry #tips #jobsearch

It’s a tough job market out there, and particularly so for new grads. If you’ve recently graduated and are on the job hunt, HBR has an article tailored to your situation. We’ll admit that there’s nothing earthshatteringly new here, but it’s a good distillation of key things that you can do to help snag that first job. We found the advice about how to arrange informational interviews particularly helpful. https://lnkd.in/ezWeHAS8 #hbr #phdcareers #altac #beyondacademia #phd #leavingacademia #academiatoindustry #tips #jobsearch

Here’s an interesting perspective shift for people moving beyond academia: When an organisation posts a job listing they are letting you know that it has “a problem, or a gap in its abilities”. Your task is to figure out how you help them to fill that gap or solve that problem (https://lnkd.in/dgrKkwyf). But how can you do this when the hiring process is famously opaque? There’s no silver bullet, but here’s a few places to start your research: 🔎 The job ad itself - What does it say about the role and skills required? Does it link out to other materials and what do they say? What can you get from reading between the lines? (Yes, this one sounds obvious, but it never fails to surprise us how many applications don’t reflect the job description). 🔎 The organisation’s website - What does it say about their values and their business model? How are they presenting themselves to the world? Does the organisation or CEO or hiring manager have a blog or LinkedIn profile that will give some insight?  🔎 Web search - Has the organisation appeared in any news stories over the past year? Perhaps there are articles about broader industry trends that could give you some context. Does the organisation appear on any review sites like Glassdoor? 🔎 Insider knowledge - This is the trickiest but most rewarding one. If you can find someone in or on the periphery of your network who works or has previously worked at the organisation, they are going to be able to give you an inside scoop that no publicly available materials ever will. None of this is a guarantee of course, but an hour of desktop research or buying someone a cup of coffee for a chat might just be the thing that gets your application over the line. #nature #phdcareers #altac #beyondacademia #phd #leavingacademia #tips #jobsearch #academiatoindustry

From academia to the classroom? Why would you need a PhD to teach secondary school science? Well, technically you don’t, but Nature has a great profile of a bunch of PhDs who have made this exact decision. They talk about the joy of mentoring young learners and building their love of science, how they see their PhD experience as preparing them for rooms full of teens, and some of the pragmatic benefits of teaching as a career. We wrote a book! It's chock-full of easy to follow guidance on how to navigate the transition to a career beyond academia, and we are seeking beta readers who have either made this move themselves or are looking to do so. The role of a beta reader is to give honest feedback on what's working and what could be done better in a piece of writing, so if that sounds of interest to you please get in touch to find out more. #phdcareers #altac #beyondacademia #phd #leavingacademia

Great point David. It's also important to remember that not all organisations use ATS, and not all organisations who use ATS will use it to automatically filter candidates.

Curious about how your industry job application gets reviewed? A lot of PhDs think they know, but often get it wrong. Here's what happens when you hit submit: 1 - Your resume and information is populated to a dashboard in the ATS system 2 - Initial screening - a recruiter reviews and discusses your application with the hiring manager and decides whether or not to set up a first call with you (usually with the recruiter) 3 - First round interview - usually with a hiring manager to assess for skills and team fit 4 - Second round interview(s) - usually with peers and/or company leaders to assess fit 5 - Decision - feedback from all interviews is compiled/discussed with hiring manager and a hiring decision is made 6 - Offer - the recruiter will compile an offer, get it approved, and then send it to you 7 - Acceptance - if you accept the offer, you'll generally sign some paperwork and you're good to go. Otherwise, there will likely be a negotiation period. Things to note: - The ATS system is a database, not an automated reviewer of your application - The recruiter is a gatekeeper - they have influence - make them an ally - The hiring manager is the decision-maker - this is the person you have to impress - The hiring team are informants - make a consistent impression The hiring process can be stressful, but knowing who you're talking to and why can be a game changer. 🔁 Pass it along - repost to help a friend :) ____________________________ Are you a PhD struggling to get interviews and land an industry job? Are you considering moving out of academia but don't have a particular career path in mind? Here's an exercise for you. Navigate through to your suggested LinkedIn contacts, and as you scroll through, keep an eye out for people with “Dr” or “PhD” in their name, who are not working at a university. Pay attention to the variety of different roles and industries that they work in, and pick a few that appeal to you. Have a sneaky look at the experience section of these people's profiles to get a sense of what their path from PhD to their current role was. Half an hour of sticky-beaking should give you a solid list of roles and industries to look further into. #phdcareers #altac #beyondacademia #phd #leavingacademia #tips #jobsearch
