WBYM is celebrating 5 years since its inception! In October 2019, our team took the first steps towards creating the program, and in April of 2020 it was recognised as the organisation it is today. We are thrilled to see what WBYM will achieve over the coming years.

Our Co-Founders Strange Karen and Janine Dayman were so pleased to be involved in the Impact Seed 2024 Impact Economy Forum at Fraser’s State Reception Centre in King’s Park, yesterday. The Forum was aimed at spotlighting WA’s growing impact economy. They also has the opportunity to catch up with Natalie Egleton, CEO of FRRR (Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal), to share some feedback on the value of FRRR’s support for the WBYM program.

Thank you Melissa Lithgow for your kind and supportive words! We are so thrilled with the work WBYM does, and so excited for what the future holds.
One of the best (and most rewarding) things I’ve done in my life is volunteer as a youth mentor for the Wheatbelt & Beyond Youth Mentoring (WBYM) organisation. Such a fantastic program run by two of the most inspiring women you’ll ever meet in Karen Strange (aka Strange Karen) and Janine Dayman - they represent the heart and soul of regional Australia! 🇦🇺 I met Karen in Bruce Rock around two years ago as part of our regional engagement work with the Office of Defence Industry Support. I was struck by Karen (and her husband Steve’s) unashamed love and passion for the Shire of Bruce Rock and the broader Wheatbelt region. I also got to hear about WBYM and immediately asked if I was too old become a mentor. The rest is history! Last week, I was lucky enough to get out to the annual WBYM camp (joined by WO2 Murray MacDonald, who I’d previously served with - thanks Murray!) to talk to the kids about both the uniformed and non-uniformed sides of working for Defence. Great fun to interact with the young people and answer all the curly questions that came our way! Well done to Emma Everett for expertly facilitating. For those who don’t know - WBYM links adults (usually Perth-based) as mentors with schoolkids in the Wheatbelt region of WA. The intent is to give Wheatbelt kids a view of what could be beyond the Wheatbelt but also how they can make the most of the awesome place they already find themselves in. It’s simple - but so cool. 😎…and the rewards for mentors like me are immense! I know WBYM are always looking for mentors - if you are interested go to the WBYM page or feel free to DM me for more information. You won’t regret it! #odis #volunteering #wheatbelt #regional #wa #wbym #mentoring

We would like to again thank Caroline Robinson from 150Square for her generous support and guidance of the WBYM Committee during our Strategic Planning session. In facilitating the space, Caz enabled the group to exchange knowledge, ideas and their vision for the future, allowing a fresh and focused approach to the WBYM Organisation over the past months. We are overjoyed to have such talented and knowledgeable people guiding rural organisations and, in turn, greatly contributing to the prosperity of the communities in which they operate. Many thanks Caz, from the WBYM Committee.

WBYM Co-Founders Janine Dayman and Strange Karen were delighted by the opportunity to attend an Education Roundtable at Government House on the 4th of June hosted by Mrs Dawson, in conjunction with Awards WA. WBYM was formed in 2019 following 10 years of developing and running a successful mentoring program at Bruce Rock DHS. 5 years later, the program has expanded to our current 7 schools, furthering the opportunity to provide successful, flexible and cost effective mentoring to students in Regional, Rural and Remote District High Schools. Our aim is to continue expanding a strong and sustainable program which stands the test of time and is resilient to the economic, environmental and population challenges that are facing many rural communities.
