About us

The Department of Communities is Western Australia’s major human services department that brings together vital services and functions that support individual, family and community wellbeing. Working closely with our partners across government and the community services sector, our areas of responsibility include disability services, child protection and family support, housing, community services, prevention of family and domestic violence, seniors, ageing, veterans, volunteering and women’s interests. We also lead the State’s social recovery, following challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. We support many Western Australians, with a focus on some of the most vulnerable people in our state. The job we do is rewarding but can be challenging. People, place and home is at the core of everything we do and why we do it. We work for the people who make up our communities across Western Australia; we help people be the best they can be. We focus our efforts on building places that are inclusive and connected and offer everyone the opportunity to prosper. And we support children and families so that they can have a physically and emotionally secure place to call home. We promote a diverse workforce and embrace a high standard of equal opportunity, health and safety, and ethical practice. Join us and work in a role where you can make a real difference to the lives of children, families and communities throughout Western Australia. • Yesterday our team hit the road and dropped off hundreds of donations for the Dress for Success Worldwide clothing drive. Dress for Success empowers vulnerable women with professional clothing, career tools, and the confidence they need to reach employment. We believe all women should have access to economic independence, empowering them to overcome bias and feel their best as they enter the workforce. A heartfelt thank you to the generosity of our people for donating work ready attire. 👏💜👗 With a workforce of more than 74% women, we know just how important it is that women have the resources and opportunities to thrive. • Our Working with Children team is hitting the road, kicking off info sessions across the state from 7 April, starting in the Midwest. Organisations can register for an "Explore the Check" session to connect with the team, share their experiences with the WWC Check, and discuss any challenges they’ve faced. These sessions are a great opportunity to work together, clarify WWC Check obligations, and get answers to any questions. 📍 Midwest organisations – register now: https://docsm.au/4l429IW 👉 Not in the Midwest? Email WWCEvents@communities.wa.gov.au to organise a session in your area.

  • As we near the end of the high-threat season, we want to shine a light on the incredible efforts of our Emergency Relief and Support “Purple Shirt” team. This year, our dedicated ERS team has been on the ground across the State, responding to emergencies in Northam, Albany, Donnybrook, Esperance, Byford, Marble Bar, Wagin, West Arthur, Port Hedland, Karratha, Dunsborough, Bindoon, the Perth Hills, Exmouth, Manjimup, Pemberton, Collie, and Lancelin. When Cyclone Zelia threatened communities, the team stepped in to help, setting up two evacuation centres and assisting 300 local residents. After the cyclone made landfall, they continued their support, offering warm cups of tea, a safe place to rest and assistance to those affected. 💜To our incredible “Purple Shirts”, thank you for your selflessness, dedication, and unwavering community spirit. Your support makes a world of difference when people need it most. We are always looking for incredible individuals to join our team. To see our current opportunities, visit https://docsm.au/4gQZ38T
