Congratulations to Daniel Maddern, Harry Fitzgerald, Casper Saint-Saens and Olivia Ertugrul who were awarded the Wine Australia Prizes at this year’s Oliphant Science Awards. Held annually by the South Australian Science Teachers Association, the awards are open to students in Reception to Year 12 and are aimed at supporting, encouraging and celebrating science education within the state’s schools. The Wine Australia Prizes are presented to the most outstanding entries highlighting food chemistry. Wine Australia continues to support these awards which acknowledges the passionate educators empowering young people to pursue their interests in scientific inquiry and the application of science, technology, engineering and mathematics across agriculture, viticulture, food chemistry and oenology. Daniel’s project (Year 3-4 prize for scientific inquiry) was on the effect of flour power on sourdough yeast; Harry’s model (Year 5-6 prize for models & inventions), titled ‘Buggy Bites - Sustainable and Delicious’, demonstrated food made from bugs; Casper Saint-Saens’ project (Year 5-6 prize for scientific inquiry) looked at bubble tea and how popping pearls are made; and Olivia Ertugrul’s model depicted pH levels. Wine Australia is funded by the sector, for the sector, through grapegrower, winemaker and exporter levies and user-pays charges, with matching funds from the Australian Government for research and innovation. Working collaboratively with the sector and Government, we amplify insights, connection and capability building to support profitable, resilient and sustainable grape and wine businesses. Wine Australia is a Commonwealth Government statutory authority established under the Wine Australia Act 2013.

Have you seen groups of scale in your vineyard like those shown in the photo on the left this season? If so, researchers from SARDI and the University of Adelaide would like you to send them a photo. Parthenolecanium persicae used to be a dominant scale species in Australia. However, this may have changed as frosted scale (depicted in the image on the right) is now the most common scale species according to recent vineyard surveys. As part of the three-year, Wine Australia-funded project on grapevine scale biology and monitoring in Australian vineyards, researchers are keen to determine the current spread and prevalence of Parthenolecanium persicae. If you have photos of Parthenolecanium persicae from your vineyard similar to those in the photo, please email them to Grapevinescale@gmail.com All data collected as part of the project will play a critical role in helping the sector manage and mitigate scale-related issues in Australian vineyards. #wineresearch #vineyards #australianvineyards #vineyardresearch #vineyardmanagement @scaleinvineyards #scale

Sensory scientist Desiree Likos from Australian Wine and Research Institute (AWRI) loves her work which explores the appearance, smell, taste and texture of wines to better understand exactly what consumers enjoy in a glass of wine. When Desiree was in high school, she didn’t know sensory scientist roles even existed so she’s keen to share career insights with school students exploring future employment pathways. Meet Desiree at our innovative digital careers website which provides a real-world connection from the vineyard and winery to Australia’s education curriculum. It explores the diverse range roles available in the viticulture and wine sector, the pathways to these careers, and a range of age-appropriate teaching resources. With spring well and truly underway, growers and vineyard managers may have started to notice stunted shoots in their vineyards. This can be a symptom of Eutypa Dieback (ED). This is a timely reminder of Wine Australia's Best Practice Management Guide (BPMG) on Grapevine Trunk Disease, which is a great resource to guide both new and experienced vineyard managers. The South Australia section of the US/UK media visit continued with a day in Riverland, starting out touring the vineyard at Oxford Landing, with a tasting on the landing led by winemaker Andy La Nauze, followed by an al fresco lunch at Bassham Wines, with a tasting of wines produced from alternative varieties from their organically farmed vineyards, including Delinquente and Unico Zelo. Next up was Starrs Reach vineyard, with a tour and tasting led by Sheridan Alm, and finishing up with a boat trip on the Murray River, tasting through some Ricca Terra wines with Ashley Ratcliff (along with a little waterskiing), and a BBQ dinner at Bookpurnong Station with Ricca Terra and Mallee Estate wines. Several members of the Wine Australia staff have spent the last few months participating in the Corporate Cup – an event that aims to place emphasis on health, fitness and mental wellbeing. As part of the Cup, team members would run a circuit of 2.2km, 4.5km or 7.25km each fortnight with the aim of improving each week. Healthy people help to make a healthy wine sector, so it was a fantastic opportunity to walk the talk. Congratulations to all who competed!

Next stop for the UK/US media group was South Australia, with a day each in Adelaide Hills, Riverland and McLaren Vale. Kicking off in Adelaide Hills with a hearty breakfast and a tasting at Longview, followed by a visit to Shaw + Smith Piccadilly Vineyard, and a tasting and lunch at the winery hosted by winemaker Adam Wadewitz and David LeMire. From there, the group visited Ashton Hills for a scenic tasting overlooking the vines with Matt Deller MW, and a final visit to BK Wines, they got a sneak peek at the new cellar door from winemaker Brendan Keys. Dinner at the Crafers Hotel with winemakers from Ochota Barrels, Worlds Apart Wines, Murdoch Hill and Gentle Folk was a great way to wrap up the day, and inspired lots of great conversation. Thanks to all the wineries who hosted the group and shared wines, and also to Sarah Carlson for organizing a fantastic day!
