Preparations are in full swing for the Australian Food and Wine Collaboration Group’s next export market activation, taking place in Japan next month. Japan is the sixth destination for the Collaboration Group, which is targeting high-value export markets throughout Asia to increase export opportunities for Australian producers of premium wine and food. The Collaboration Group is leveraging the strength of the five member organisations, which includes Wine Australia, along with Dairy Australia, Hort Innovation, Meat & Livestock Australia and Seafood Industry Australia, to deepen connections with Japan, advance bilateral trade and improve market access. Japan’s growing enthusiasm for Australian wine presents a tremendous opportunity for the industry, and this latest market activation provides the ideal platform for the industry to better understand the market opportunities, build lasting connections with key trade, and bring people together in a celebration of premium Australian wine. #tastethewonders #tastethewondersofoz #aussiewine #australianfood #aussiefood

Yesterday, Wine Australia welcomed to its Adelaide offices the four successful participants of the inaugural Australia-China Winemaker Immersion Program — an initiative of Australian Grape & Wine and the China Alcoholic Drinks Association aimed at fostering deeper collaboration between the Australian and Chinese wine industries. Treasury Wine Estates is a key co-organiser of the program which gives early-career winemakers behind-the-scenes experiences to build on their cultural and industry knowledge. The participants — Ding Weikang, of agricultural institution Northwest A&F University in Shaanxi; Gao Yujie, of September Helan in Ningxia; Miao Chengpeng, of Château Rongzi in Shaanxi; and Xue Churan, of China Great Wall Wine Company in Hebei — were joined by their interpreter Jun Wang (Lucius) and Xiangyi Sun (Sara), from TWE’s public affairs team. They are spending four weeks being exposed to local viticultural practices, wine production, wine tourism, and research and innovation. The cohort met with Wine Australia staff including CEO Martin Cole, General Manager -Research and Innovation Paul Smith, ESG Program Manager Julian Marchant, Senior Program Manager Alex Sas, Research Impact Manager Josh Hixson, Program Manager - Regional Innovation Andy Clarke, Label Integrity Manager Rebecca Fox and Export Assistance Officer Nancy Pan. The role of Wine Australia, an overview of its research program portfolio as well as a look at the specific focus areas of ESG, sustainability, climate and water management, agtech and innovation in the wine sector, and the export process for Australian wine were among the topics discussed with the Wine Australia team. We wish the participants well for the remainder of their visit. #aussiewine #australianwine #australia #wineaustralia #winecustomers #winecommunity #wineeducation #winepeople #wineplace #winequality #winescience #winemaking #grapegrowing

A feasibility study is underway in South Australia to determine if collection points in the state’s wine regions could be a simple, sustainable and cost-effective way to help vineyard owners manage the disposal of CCA-treated trellis posts. Across Australian vineyards, it is estimated there are around 70 million timber trellis posts treated with CCA — a timber preservative containing copper, chromium and arsenic that protects it from fungal and insect attack. More than half of these are in South Australia, and each year, between 700,000 to 1.8 million CCA posts need to be disposed of across the state due to breakage, vineyard redevelopment or removal. The 13th of March is International Riesling Day! Crisp, citrusy Riesling is a delicate beauty, shining most brightly when handled with a light touch. As one of the first varieties to be grown in Australia, it has a long history here and is produced in a wide range of styles. Australia is one of the world’s top Riesling producers with production figures similar to the United States and higher than France (unsurprisingly, Germany takes the top spot!). Over 20,000 tonnes of Riesling was crushed in Australia in 2024 and it is made in just about every wine growing state in the country. Cheers to that! World wine production in 2024 is estimated to be the lowest since 1961, even lower than the previous record low in 2023. While climatic conditions contributed to this result, there is evidence that wine-producing countries are starting to respond to prolonged over-supply conditions. This market bulletin looks at whether the reduction in global supply is likely to lead to improved market conditions – and higher prices – for wine and winegrapes in Australia.
