About us
Women’s Circus is unique. We are a not for profit intersectional feminist arts organisation based in the Drill Hall in Footscray, offering a year round program of social circus, creative projects and thought provoking performances. We create impact that is memorable and enduring, whether from a momentary encounter as an audience member or a lifetime of commitment through membership. Women’s Circus began as a project at Footscray Community Arts Centre, and became know for creating original circus shows advocating justice and equity for women and their communities. From our early days of providing a safe space for survivors of violence, we’ve grown into an inclusive community that welcomes all people of marginalised genders with an interest in physicality, circus and performance. Today, Women’s Circus is an internationally recognised leader in the field of social circus. Our innovative programs offer individuals and communities the opportunity to develop skills, confidence and creativity while fostering a sense of belonging and connection. We have a small team of core staff, working alongside dedicated and experienced trainers, and supported by a volunteer board. Women’s Circus uses circus as a tool for social transformation (termed social circus). Circus has unique advantages when it comes to fostering positive change within communities. Embodied knowledge, trust, risk, playfulness and creativity are intrinsic to social circus. It has the potential to transform boundaries and hierarchies, transcend language barriers, and strengthen communities against erasure and exclusion. At Women’s Circus our emphasis is on the potential of the human body. It’s not just about achieving high goals, it’s also about the attempt and support. It’s about building self-confidence and reclaiming your body. It’s about bringing people together, accessing creativity and physicality within a safe space.

Next week we open our brand new show Small Acts of Resistance, created and performed by an ensemble of our members all over 50, many of whom are in their 60s and 70s. The creative process for this work has unfolded over several months of development sessions, an intentionally long and care focussed process created with the cast experience at the forefront. We are thrilled to premiere this work and support this fantastically interesting group of women and gender diverse people to hit the stage, take up space and share their stories. We hope you can join us for this unmissable experience and give this group the applause they deserve. 5-8 February 6pm Gasworks Arts Park All shows Auslan Interpreted You can read more about the show and book tickets here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gGX3CJZs Small Acts of Resistance is presented by Women’s Circus, Gasworks Arts Park and Midsumma Festival and supported by Lesbians Incorporated and The Phil Taylor Foundation. . . . And just like that it's time for us to announce of our End of Year Member Cabaret! This event is such a special one on the Women's Circus calendar. It's an opportunity for any of our members to jump up on stage, perhaps even for the first time, and bring their wacky and wonderful ideas to life. We love to see the transformations in our members, and support them in their own circus journeys as they discover not only new skills but new friendships. This year's cabaret, Braver than a Bear, is directed by the one and only Malia Walsh of Circus Trick Tease, which has been very exciting for our community and has already proven a fantastic fit with our members. Sponsored this year by Community Bank Seddon alongside an amazing range of bar and raffle sponsors, Braver than a Bear will showcase the incredible power of social circus and leave you inspired into the new year 🐻 https://bit.ly/3Av9ApZ ID: two clowns pull furry bear legs legs wearing clown shoes from out of frame and look a camera making expressive funny faces. The clown on the top leg wears red, green and white diamond pattern and a red tutu and white chef hat, and the clown holding the bottom bear leg wear a red and black circus leotard with a red and black ruffle and black knee high socks. Text reads “The 2024 End of Year Member Cabaret!”. Read graphic text reads “Braver than a Bear” with a paw print. It was fantastic to head up to the beautiful northern rivers earlier this month for the National Circus Festival with our pals Spaghetti Circus. It was a lovely week of circus training, performance and connection, with many meals shared with our circus peers and new friends. Our trainers Katy, Kelsea, Em and Sim worked hard up-skilling in the training week for some professional development, along with our member Bella. Hanne and Steph from the office also joined to get some sun (and rain!) and connect with our sector colleagues and friends. Until next time! A huge thank you to every single person who donated to our EOFY fundraising campaign ❤️ Another huge thank you to everyone who shared our campaign, talked with their friends and family about our circus, and commented their own wonderful Women's Circus stories on our posts. We couldn't be more grateful for all your support. We raised almost $16,000 for our circus. And while that didn't meet our target and we have lots more fundraising to do, we are so deeply appreciative to everyone who was able to give amidst this tough cost of living crisis and with everything going on in the world. Our circus really does change lives. We are so inspired and grateful that so many of you share our vision of empowerment for people of a marginalised gender. Your donations will have real and tangible impact on those that need it most, so from the bottom of our hearts, thank you! . . . ⚠️ It's the final week to make your tax deductible donation to Women's Circus! Thank you to everyone who has donated so far, your support is truly appreciated and will enable us to continue our life changing social circus programs! The impact Women's Circus has on people's lives is significant and lasting. One of our long time members Vivienne shared her story 💬 “Women’s Circus has been a central creative community in my life for around 20 years. For me, Women’s Circus allure has always been the combination of non-competitive physical movement, exciting skills, creativity and the opportunity to perform as part of a community. I've been so fortunate to grow and develop personally and creatively in a supportive, trust-building environment that comes from a proud feminist history and continues to embrace intersectionality today. Over the years I've experienced a myriad of circus and performance activities. I've enjoyed working with my community and different directors to develop and present performances in many annual shows, in different venues. I'm currently a proud member of the Women's Circus inclusive ensemble that presented Momentum in 2022 and 2023. Women’s Circus embodies the ideal that circus can make the world a better place!” Your donation will enable more people like Vivienne to access our life changing programs and help us continue our vital work. Please make a tax deductible donation by 30 June via the link 👉 https://bit.ly/457QYHo or on our website and join us as a change-maker! ❤️ . . .
