Women on Boards, founded in 2006 in Australia and the UK in 2012, is a thriving network of extraordinary women who come together as they commence or continue their board and leadership journeys. Our vision is to have gender balance and cultural diversity within board and leadership roles. Since our inception in 2006, WOB’s vision has been to increase the number of women on boards and in leadership roles to achieve a minimum of 40% women on boards and across leadership roles. We welcome the fact that many other advocacy groups have since adopted our founding vision. Many boards across many sectors have achieved this 40% milestone. However within gender we now need to look more closely at cultural diversity on boards and raise awareness and create opportunities for culturally diverse women to connect, network and interact with boards. WOB Membership is open to all. It's free to register with a fee to join as a Full or Premium Member. Earlier this week I chaired the first of 8 sessions of the Marie Coleman WOBSX syndicate. WoBSX is the brainchild of Women on Boards and Dan Liszka and specifically aims to help women prepare for ASX board roles. Each syndicate is named after a leading Australian woman - I was in the inaugural, Helen Lynch, syndicate several years ago chaired by the fabulous Jon Brett. Marie Coleman is a nonagenarian trail-blazing public servant, feminist, social activist, and the first woman to head an Australian Commonwealth statutory agency. We were very fortunate (and excited) to have her speak to us on the day. I asked her three questions: Q: What are you most proud of? A: The work I did post-retirement in advocating for and defending women's reproductive health and maternity (now parental) leave entitlements during the early 2000's. Q: What do you wish you'd done differently? A: Early on, I was in too much of a hurry and I should have done some things more slowly. Q: What piece of advice would you share? A: Be persistent, especially if you are convinced that your path is the right one - don't just be persuaded by the other voices. I hope I am as lucid, thoughtful and active as Marie is when I get to my nineties!
