This year, World Water Day is dedicated to highlighting the importance of glacier preservation. Did you know that mapping glaciers is a critical component of geo hazard mapping? Receding glaciers increase the likelihood of slope failures, which can lead to tsunamis. In 2020, Woolpert surveyed the vicinity of Barry Glacier with reports of an imminent slope failure putting the city of Whittier, Alaska at risk. This survey supported the development of a critical tsunami inundation model and coastal resilience planning for local and regional stakeholders. #WorldWaterDay #UNWater #glaciers #glacierpreservation #survey #water
Did you know: Mapping glaciers is a critical component of geo hazard mapping. Receding glaciers increase the likelihood of slope failures, which can cause tsunamis. This year, World Water Day is dedicated to discussing the importance of glacier preservation. In 2020, Woolpert surveyed the vicinity of Barry Glacier in response to a joint NOAA Coast Survey and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) request. The USGS reported concern of an imminent slope failure within the area that could cause a tsunami in the region including the city of Wittier, Alaska. This survey aided critical tsunami inundation models and supports local and regional stakeholders in their coastal resilience planning efforts.
